Developer ChillyRoom has recently announced Loulan: The Cursed Sand, an action RPG with strong Diablo vibes, set for release on PC and PlayStation 5. In Loulan: The Cursed Sand, PlayStation 5 and PC gamers will play as a skeletal warrior travelling along the Silk Road in Western China in search of the lost kingdom of Loulan.
Ever since Black Myth: Wukong became a huge global hit, Chinese games have gained popularity in the West. Loulan: The Cursed Sand will be the latest one of these Chinese games to explore the local mythology, inspired by the real-life Loulan mummies. The game will tell the tragic love story of an exiled royal guard who ventures into war to find the princess he loves.

Loulan: The Cursed Sand Revealed With Trailer
ChillyRoom recently unveiled the first Loulan: The Cursed Sand trailer, which showcases some of the gorgeous landscapes of the game, which include huge deserts, rocky regions, and sprawling ruins. According to the game’s creators, all levels will be handcrafted, and regions will be “atmospheric” and feature diverse environments. Gameplay-wise, players can expect to control a protagonist with dual forms, who can freely switch between bone and sand-based fighting styles, each one with distinct combat abilities. Gamers will learn different sand abilities while playing, which can be used in fights, but also to solve puzzles and explore levels. As expected from an action RPG with strong Diablo vibes, the game will be packed with different enemies, including Elites and colossal Bosses with unique powers.
There's still a lot to be revealed about the upcoming Loulan: The Cursed Sand, though, including when the game will release or how long it’ll be. In any case, gamers looking for a new PlayStation 5 role-playing game should not hold their breath, as it’s possible that the game may not release until 2026 or 2027.
An increasing number of games set along the Silk Road have been announced recently. Earlier this year, for example, NetEase’s Blood Message was announced. The single-player title will be set in 848 AD, during the late Tang Dynasty, a troubled time for the region. Players will take on the role of a nameless messenger and his son and will explore the Silk Road to deliver a message that could affect the future of their homeland. Blood Message was described as a “cinematic third-person action” experience, and it seems like a good pick for fans of the action genre who are interested in discovering more about Chinese history.
