The new system software update introduces a big change players have been asking for, which is the ability to join a Discord call from the PS5 console's Game Base without needing a second device with the app already on it. Many felt that the process was rather tedious and unwieldy, especially for those who just wanted to instantly jump into a call with their friends while playing. In relation to this, children's PlayStation accounts can now link to external apps and third-party services with parental approval. This includes Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music, as well as streaming platforms such as Twitch and YouTube.

This new improvement to the social functionality comes over three years after the partnership between Sony and Discord was finalized. While the full slate of Discord features were slowly added to the PlayStation, many felt they weren't implemented ideally, leading gamers to continually voice out their concerns about the usage of the popular communication app.

You can now start or join a Discord voice chat directly from your PS5. Open Game Base in the control center and select the Discord tab to access your servers and direct calls.
