A new report suggests that the PS5 Digital Edition may soon receive a storage space downgrade in Europe. That’s terrible news for Sony fans who have not yet purchased their PlayStation 5, especially considering that this edition does not come with a disc drive.
Originally released in November 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the PS5 has become the most-sold console of the current generation. Earlier this year, Sony revealed that over 80 million PS5 consoles have been sold. This number includes all different editions of the console, including the standard one, PS5 Slim, and PS5 Pro.

PS5 Digital Edition Could Have Less Storage Space in Europe
Unfortunately, reports from the prominent leaker Billbil-Kun from the French gaming media outlet Deal Labs have indicated that starting on September 13, the PS5 Digital Edition will come with 825 GB of SSD storage space instead of 1 TB in Europe. The report also indicates that the console will continue to cost the same in the region, however. Back in April 2025, the PS5 Digital Edition went from €449 to €499 in the region, a price that remains until today.
It’s possible that the reduction in SSD storage space could be part of Sony’s efforts to avoid another price increase in Europe. Last month, Sony announced that it would hike the PS5 prices in the United States, taking the Digital Edition from $449 to $499, the standard one from $499 to $549, and the PS5 Pro from the already costly $699 to $749. Fortunately, the cost of controllers was not affected by these changes. Across the industry, console prices have increased, too, with Microsoft making the Xbox cost more, and Nintendo releasing the Switch 2 for a higher price tag than expected by some analysts.
Even software has been affected by some of Sony’s price increases. Back in June, Sony suddenly started charging more for PS4 and PS5 games in two regions: Brazil and Turkey. After the hike, prices in Brazil started to cost around 400 Brazilian Real (BRL), which is around $73 USD, and 3,5000 Turkish Liras in Turkey, about $88.
Fortunately, not all PS5-related news is negative right now. Earlier this week, Sony announced that a new Astro Bot-inspired PS5 controller would be released on October 30. The limited-edition Astro Bot Joyful DualSense Wireless controller is similar to the one released together with the popular platformer, but it features a few aesthetic differences. Gamers can already pre-order the controller starting on September 12 and, while the price has not been revealed yet, there’s an indication that it may cost $80 like the previous controller.
Sony's PlayStation 5 is part of the ninth console generation and debuted with a launch lineup that included Demon's Souls and Astro's Playroom. The console comes with a Blu-ray disc, although a digital-only edition is also available for a cheaper price.
