Users with a PS5 and a copy of Star Wars Racer Revenge now have a pricey and strange way to jailbreak their console, thanks to a discovery that has since caused copies of the oft-forgotten Star Wars title to spike in price throughout the winter. Although Star Wars Racer Revenge copies were made for PS4, the game's new value comes from using a PS5 to play it via backward compatibility.

Originally released in early 2002, Star Wars Racer Revenge was a PS2-exclusive sequel to Star Wars Episode 1: Racer. Racer Revenge takes place approximately eight years following the events of The Phantom Menace, with the podracer Sebulba seeking payback against Anakin Skywalker for defeating him in the Boonta Eve Classic. Sebulba's defeat happened just before the young Skywalker had left Tattooine to train as a Jedi. Star Wars Racer Revenge was re-launched digitally on the PS3 and PS4 throughout the 2010s, with the PS4 version making it onto physical discs via Limited Run Games. True to the publisher's name, around 8,500 copies of Star Wars Racer Revenge from Limited Run Games were released for the PS4 in October 2019.

An accidental release date leak for PlayStation 5 reveals a highly anticipated free-to-play game coming to the console in January 2026.

Star Wars Racer Revenge Allows PS5 Users to Jailbreak the Console

Although Star Wars Racer Revenge was never one of the more expensive PS2 titles during its first release window in 2002, the PS4 re-release via Limited Run Games has experienced an unexpected and valuable revival. Reports state that PS4 physical copies can be used on a PS5 to jailbreak the system, which requires the game's disc to pull off. Once news of the jailbreak began spreading on social media, the prices of Star Wars Racer Revenge began soaring on third-party retailers like eBay. As of this writing, copies of Star Wars Racer Revenge can be found for around $250 to $300 on average. The price hike is both due to the PS5 jailbreak and the fact that only 8,500 copies of the PS4 port were ever made by Limited Run Games during its 2019 run. Ergo, the cost of jailbreaking a PS5 is nearly half that of the console itself.

In short, the upcoming version 12.0 jailbreak of the PS5 system can only be done via physical copies of Star Wars Racer Revenge. This is due to a bug that is only present within the version of Star Wars Racer Revenge that was printed onto PS4 discs. This bug allows users to inject code via the game's Hall of Fame menu. By jailbreaking a PS5 console, users can then play pirated games on it. Although game companies have stepped up their efforts to crack down on piracy across the industry, that has not stopped users from finding ways to jailbreak a console and play pirated games on them. Fans looking to just play Star Wars Racer Revenge on PS4 or PS5 without paying for a physical copy can do so by purchasing the game on the PlayStation Store for $5.99 or by subscribing to PlayStation Plus Premium.

Star Wars Games Have a Bright Future Ahead

As for other Star Wars game projects, fans have at least two confirmed major titles to look forward to in the years ahead. Fans of Star Wars Racer Revenge will have a new racing title to tide them over, as Star Wars Galactic Racer is scheduled to arrive sometime in 2026 on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. Star Wars Galactic Racer is being developed by Fuse Games, which includes developers who worked on the Burnout and Need for Speed franchises in the past.

Additionally, fans looking for a gritty Star Wars story with plenty of lightsaber and Force-powered action will have Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic to look forward to. Although the game has no concrete release window, Arcanaut Studios game director Casey Hudson stated that Fate of the Old Republic will be out before 2030, despite rumors that claimed otherwise.
