According to a reputable insider, the PlayStation 5 Pro may get its first hardware revision before the end of September. However, this refreshed version is unlikely to bring with it any major redesigns or hardware updates for the PS5 Pro.
The PS5 Pro was launched in November 2024 as PlayStation's flagship console, touting huge performance upgrades over the base PS5 thanks to upgraded GPU hardware and a new AI-based image upscaler dubbed PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Many PS5 Pro enhanced games have upheld these claimed performance gains, and the hardware itself has received few complaints aside from its cost and the exclusion of a disc drive as standard. As is tradition with every PlayStation console, though, Sony seems to have gone under the PS5 Pro's hood for an upcoming model revision.
If PlayStation 6 Leaks Are True, The PS5 Pro May Pale in Comparison
Rumors and leaks allegedly give insight to the power and pricing of the PlayStation 6, being a stark contrast to what fans have seen with the PS5 Pro.
New PS5 Pro Model Revision Launching in Europe on September 30
Following the recent PS5 model revision that went on sale in Europe last week, Sony is purportedly preparing to do the same for the PS5 Pro. A new Dealabs report penned by reliable insider billbil-kun alleges that, as per certification documents filed in Japan earlier this year, Sony is set to release a new PS5 Pro model dubbed CFI-7121. This revised PS5 Pro model will launch in Europe on Tuesday, September 30, and on the outside at least, the console is said to look and feel identical to the current version. Though unlikely in the first place, a "Slim" revision can therefore be ruled out for the PS5 Pro.
Inside the bodyshell, billbil-kun speculates that Sony may have tweaked the PS5 Pro's hardware to enable better energy efficiency for the model revision. Should this be the case, the new PS5 Pro model will likely output less heat and as a result, run quieter too. Rather importantly, the insider has clarified that the PS5 Pro revision will retain the 2TB SSD that shipped with the original model. Considering the aforementioned PS5 model revision downgraded the console's storage from 1TB to 825GB with no reduction in price, it's a relief to see that Sony isn't repeating this tactic with the PS5 Pro. Speaking of price, no changes are expected on this front for the new PS5 Pro model either, with it continuing to retail for €799.99.
It remains to be seen whether this new PS5 Pro model will come to the US and what Sony has precisely changed in it, but if prior hardware revisions for the vanilla PS5 are anything to go by, optimizations in the heatsink size and motherboard layout are probable. These revisions are ultimately focused on increasing profit margins per console unit sold, so Sony will try to reduce materials like copper and plastic wherever possible inside the PS5 Pro while maintaining performance parity with the current model.
