- Rumored specs of PS5 Pro include an AMD Zen 2 CPU, Radeon custom RDNA3 GPU, 16GB DDR6 memory, and XDNA2 NPU for stable upscaled 4K output.
Potential specs of Sony's rumored Pro version of the PS5 have surfaced online, sparking speculation among gamers once again. Conversations around console upgrades to the PS5 have been ramping up over the past few months, particularly regarding expectations for the PS5 Pro. Now, new details of the rumored hardware provide a glimpse of what gamers can expect from Sony.
Previously, numerous rumors and leaks suggested that a smaller-sized 1TB version of the PS5 was in the works. In October, Sony officially unveiled the PS5 Slim at $499 for the disc edition and $449 for the digital version. While serving as an apt entry point for first-time PS5 buyers, it should be noted that apart from the sleek form factor, the PS5 Slim doesn't offer any notable performance upgrades. However, the rumored PS5 Pro is said to ship as a hardware refresh to the current console generation, similar to how the PS4 Pro served the PS4.
GTA Publisher Chimes in on PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X Pro Rumors
Grand Theft Auto's publisher offers a bit of industry insight by reflecting on the rumors about the mid-generation PS5 and Xbox Series X revisions.
As per a post on ResetEra, the PS5 Pro will reportedly house an AMD Zen 2 CPU with a dynamic frequency that peaks at 4.4GHz. The post also claims that its GPU will be a Radeon custom RDNA3 architecture with a target frequency at 2GHz and 14 -29 TFlops. In terms of memory, the post suggests that the PS5 Pro will ship 16GB DDR6 at 576 GB/s bandwidth. More notably, the rumored spec points out that the console will also feature XDNA2 NPU, an updated architecture announced by AMD with a focus on AI. This architecture is said to be key in Sony's efforts to offer "stable upscaled 4K output at higher than 30 FPS."
Additionally, the leak indicates that the PlayStation maker is expecting a September 2024 reveal, a couple of months preceding its rumored launch. While Sony itself has yet to make any official comment on the PS5 Pro, the launch window and the speculated specs do match up with previous leaks and rumors. Of course, it's always advisable to take this information with a grain of salt. However, Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson claims that Sony expects full specs to leak this month since the company has distributed developer kits to third-party studios.
Interestingly, Sony isn't the only console maker set to release an updated console. A document leak during the FTC vs Microsoft legal battle over the Activision Blizzard acquisition revealed that there's a possible hardware refresh to the Xbox Series X in the works. The document also hinted that Microsoft may be aiming for a 10th-generation Xbox console during its 2029 calendar year. Although that might have since changed after rumors of the PS6 possibly coming out by 2027. In any case, the next few years are shaping up to be an interesting time in the console gaming space.
Sony's PlayStation 5 is part of the ninth console generation and debuted with a launch lineup that included Demon's Souls and Astro's Playroom. The console comes with a Blu-ray disc, although a digital-only edition is also available for a cheaper price.
