The PlayStation Store has added the 2000 action-adventure game Fear Effect to both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in a surprise shadow drop. While it's not the first time a classic PS1 title has suddenly been ported to Sony's consoles, Fear Effect is particularly noteworthy, and is a 25-year-old game that stands out for its ahead-of-its-time gameplay mechanics.
In 2024, PlayStation users also gained access to another classic called Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars. The game was well-received by retro fans and currently holds an average score of 4.91 out of 5 on the PS Store. Now, fans of hits from the golden age of Sony's original console can enjoy yet another underrated gem.

Fear Effect Is an Award-Winning Action-Adventure PS1 Game
Fear Effect, released in February 2000 on the original PlayStation, earned several awards, including Best Adventure Game at the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine Editors' Awards. The game is often praised for its innovative use of cel-shading visuals and its seamless transitions between cutscenes and gameplay. Now available on PS5 and PS4, this PS1 classic has been re-released by Limited Run Games, the studio known for working on franchises like Bubsy. Additionally, it is priced at $9.99 on both consoles.
When Fear Effect first launched, cel-shading was still rare in video games. This technique gave the game its distinctive, anime-like character design, years before it became popular in games like Borderlands, which arrived nine years later. Another brilliant feature is its innovative HP system. Instead of traditional health points, the game uses a "fear gauge" that reflects the protagonist's heartbeat. To survive, players must manage stress and keep the gauge steady, as there are no recovery items to rely on. Fear Effect also blends action with mystery and fantasy, featuring puzzle mini-games and monster-like enemies that add variety to the gameplay.
One aspect modern PlayStation gamers might find challenging in Fear Effect is its use of tank controls. These controls move the character according to their orientation to the camera, which can take some time to get used to. However, Fear Effect offers an advantage over other tank-control games: the ability to shoot while running. Unlike most games in the genre, where players must stop to aim and fire, Fear Effect lets players run and gun, which is especially useful in stealth missions for moving freely and taking down nearby enemies with a knife.
The good news for fans on other platforms is that Fear Effect is also coming to PC. While PS5 and PS4 users can play it as of August 29, computer players will have to wait a bit longer. The Steam page lists it as coming soon, though no specific release date has been announced.
