For two entire console generations, PlayStation fans have been wanting the ability to change their PSN ID. Despite the feature being so hotly demanded by the community, Sony has mostly kept quiet about the PSN name change feature, until it finally announced last year that it was coming in "early 2019." Unfortunately, we still don't have an exact release date for the PSN name change feature, but a recent update to its refund policy confirms that it's still on the way.
Sony recently changed its PlayStation Store refund policy, mostly to clarify pre-order refunds, as well as touch on its refund policy for PSN name changes. As was expected, Sony confirmed that PSN users will not be able to cancel or get a refund if they change their online ID. Luckily, PSN users will be able to change their name one time for free, with future name changes costing $9.99 each. So as long as they are careful to pick a PSN name that they want, PlayStation users shouldn't even have to pay at all to change their old name, let alone worry about a refund.
For PlayStation users that have been looking forward to the PSN name change feature, Sony mentioning it in its updated PlayStation Store refund policy should be reassuring. It could be a sign that the PSN name change is coming sooner rather than later.
Sony tested the PSN name change feature in fall of 2018, with hopes to release it to the masses in "early 2019." We are now fourth months into the year, and Sony hasn't really brought up the PSN name change feature since its initial announcement. One would imagine that "early 2019" would mostly encompass the first quarter of the year, so perhaps the PSN name change could come as soon as this month.
That's just speculation at this time, though, and until Sony itself announces a release date for the PSN name change feature, fans should keep their expectations in check. With the early 2019 release window almost up, though, a release date for the PSN name change could be right around the corner.
