The remake of the PlayStation Portable exclusive Fate/Extra has received its first trailer, which also saw Bandai Namco commit to a 2025 release window for the RPG. The promo was shared shortly following the original PSP game's 14th anniversary.

Fate/Extra is a dungeon-crawling RPG that's part of the ever-expanding Fate series. Developed by Type-Moon and Imageepoch, the game takes place in a parallel universe to that of the Fate/Stay Night visual novel. It was originally published by Marvelous Entertainment in July 2010 as a Japan-only release. An English localization of the RPG arrived in North America and Europe in November 2011 and May 2012, respectively. In 2020, Bandai Namco announced that Type-Moon Studio BB is working on a remake of the game titled Fate/Extra Record.

Fate/Extra Record Gets Release Window and First Trailer

Four years later, the Japanese publisher finally showcased the game with a reveal trailer, which was shared at FGO Fest 2024 on August 4. The two-minute video goes over some Fate/Extra Record's story beats and even offers a few glimpses of its gameplay, such as combat and exploration sections. The promotional clip ends by revealing 2025 as the game's release window. As things stand right now, Fate/Extra Record will be a Japan exclusive at launch. But a Western release may also be on the cards, not least because Type-Moon often publishes its Japan-only games itself, but has decided to partner with Bandai Namco for Fate/Extra Record.

The 2010 game was met with fairly positive reviews at launch, with many critics praising it for its mixture of dungeon-crawling and visual novel-style storytelling focusing on everyday school life. While that combination might sound reminiscent of the 3D Persona games, the similarities are more conceptual than mechanical; not only does Fate/Extra have significantly different combat that revolves around predicting enemy moves rather than exploiting weaknesses to get extra actions, but it also lacks the Social Link system from contemporary Persona games.

Since Fate/Extra is still commonly touted as one of the best PSP-exclusive RPGs to this day, the arrival of its remake could be seen as a big deal by many fans of the genre. While its international release is still up in the air, Bandai Namco has at least confirmed Fate/Extra Record's target platforms: the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC.

Fate/Extra's 2010 PSP debut was followed by the 2013 release of Fate/Extra CCC. Type-Moon described that title as a "companion game" rather than a direct sequel. Fate/Extra CCC never made its way outside of Japan. If Fate/Extra Record were to sell well enough, Type-Moon might also consider remaking CCC.
