PUBG was one of the first big battle royale games when it first released back in 2017. Since PUBG's release, games like Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Fortnite have all released and put their own spin on the genre. Over time, PUBG has continued to grow and update to stay relevant, with its newest update just being detailed.
PUBG has stayed incredibly popular since its launch. This past May PUBG even topped Steam's bestseller list as some players prefer the game's more grounded and slower take on the battle royale genre. The game's dedication to remaining more realistic has pleased many of its long-time fans, but PUBG's newest update will see it taking a cue from one of its biggest competitors, Call of Duty: Warzone.
The feature comes with PUBG's 12.2 patch, which was just recently detailed by the game's official Twitter account. The patch will include a lot of new content such as a new 8x8 map, weapons, vehicles, and some new features like a PUBG's previously leaked self-revive and the new Comeback Arena. Many fans have pointed out, however, that the Comeback Arena sure sounds a lot like Call of Duty: Warzone's Gulag.
For those who don't know, in Call of Duty: Warzone the Gulag allows killed players a chance to dual one another with the winner being dropped back into the fight for another chance. PUBG's Comeback Arena, however, will work a little differently. Firstly, it is only available to players who die in the first Blue Zone phase on the game's newest map, and it sounds like it will play like a second, smaller battle royale match. All players who die in the first Blue Zone phase will be dropped into a smaller arena where they will have to arm themselves and fight it out for a chance to respawn during the third Blue Zone phase. The patch announcement comes shortly after PUBG held a survey asking players what features they wanted to see added to the game.
It will be interesting to see how the Comeback Arena is received by the PUBG community, especially with PUBG 2 rumored to be in development. If features like the Comeback Arena end up being popular, it could very well influence the development of the game's possible sequel, which could lead to some interesting future developments for the series. Thankfully, fans who want to check out all the new content do not have much longer to wait, as Patch 12.2 is due to release on July 7.
PUBG is available now on Mobile, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S.
