Summary

  • Rainbow Six Siege will no longer support Vulkan, but will add DX12 in Operation Twin Shells.
  • Players reacted negatively to the removal of Vulkan, citing better performance and fewer crashes.
  • Operation Twin Shells will bring a new operator, graphics updates, anti-cheat measures, and a competitive playlist.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege will no longer support Vulkan once its latest major update, Operation Twin Shells, goes live. The popular graphics API (application programming interface) known for its efficient resource utilization was added to Rainbow Six Siege in January 2020, providing many players, especially those on less capable hardware, with significant performance boosts.

Operation Twin Shells, or the Y9S3 update, is set to deliver plenty of fresh content to Ubisoft's acclaimed tactical FPS when it drops on September 10. One notable addition will be Skopos, a new defending operator in Rainbow Six Siege who has access to powerful remote-controlled robots. The update also promises to make changes to the game's graphics settings, among other things.

According to the official patch notes for Operation Twin Shells, Vulkan will no longer be available in Rainbow Six Siege. However, official support for DirectX 12 has been announced and players were assured that they would still be able to run the shooter using the older DX11 API. The upcoming graphical changes would better position Rainbow Six Siege for the future and ensure that the game's tech would be aligned with others from inside and outside of Ubisoft, a community manager for the company, Ubi-Zurik, explained in a Reddit post. Rainbow Six Siege runs on AnvilNext 2.0, the engine that was also used for other Ubisoft titles like For Honor, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and several games in the Assassin's Creed franchise.

Does Rainbow Six Siege Support Vulkan API?

  • Rainbow Six Siege loses Vulkan support in Y9S3.

Many players objected to the removal of Vulkan support from Rainbow Six Siege and demanded the API to remain in the game. Some community members pointed out on Ubi-Zurik's post that using Vulkan resolved technical issues like crashes, while others claimed that DX12 was less efficient and caused more stutters. Ubisoft's support page currently claims that using Vulkan leads to smoother graphical performance in Rainbow Six Siege.

In May, Ubisoft also received flak from its community after a paid subscription service for Rainbow Six Siege, R6 Membership, was announced. Subscribers were given access to the game's premium battle pass and exclusive cosmetics, as well as faster level progression, though many in the community feel like it offers little value for the price.

Aside from adding a new operator and making changes to the game's graphics settings, Operation Twin Shells for Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege will also introduce improved anti-cheat protection and a new competitive playlist called Siege Cup. It will deliver a long list of gameplay tweaks and bug fixes to the popular tactical shooter, as well.
