Ready or Not, Void Interactive's tactical crime thriller FPS game, has been a massive hit since launching on consoles around the middle of July, having already sold more than 2 million copies for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That news should come as a relief for die-hard fans of Ready or Not, as the game has faced steep criticism in the midst of Void Interactive's self-censorship in the transition from PC exclusive to a multi-platform game.

The game entered early access in December 2021 and hit its full release two years later, being initially met with a very strong positive reaction from players and becoming the best-selling game on Steam in the week after its release. It still holds a strong presence on that platform, as daily peak player counts from the past seven days have ranged between 32,000 and 42,000. In April, Void Interactive officially announced that Ready or Not would be coming to PlayStation and Xbox consoles, which it did on July 15.

Ready or Not's Censorship Controversy Explained

The excitement around Ready or Not's console ports has been dampened due to some controversies regarding the recent censorship of the game.

In a new post on LinkedIn, Void Interactive CEO Julio Rodriguez revealed that the game has surpassed 2 million console copies sold and counting, offering thanks to the players for their support and to the development team for creating what he called "the quintessential tactical FPS of our era." This follows a report about another sales milestone for Ready or Not from earlier in the month, which stated that the game had hit the 1 million mark in less than four days from its debut on PlayStation and Xbox, which is about one-tenth the time it took to reach the same figure on PC.

Ready or Not Overcomes Censorship Review-Bombing

The positive sales figures are likely a relief for Void Interactive, as longtime players have reacted loudly and negatively to changes made to Ready or Not ahead of its console release. These included the toning down of some graphic content, including depictions of nudity, torture, and mistreatment of children, and Void only made the changes after concerns were raised by its console partners, according to a statement released in late June. That statement indicated that players would barely notice the changes, but for many players, that turned out not to be the case.

The censorship concerns don't seem to have negatively affected the game's recent sales to a large degree, but review bombing aimed at Ready or Not has hurt its online ratings. The game's all-time Steam reviews have stayed in the "Mostly Positive" range, with 77 percent of players giving it their approval, but user reviews written in the last 30 days paint a starkly different picture, with only a 27 percent approval rating. In addition, there has been a flood of recent negative reviews, with over 14 percent of the more than 219,000 reviews left for the game on Steam having arrived within the past month. However, scores on OpenCritic remain mostly positive.
