Summary

  • Red Dead Redemption was released for PC on October 29.
  • The game pulled in over 8,000 concurrent players at launch, with 93% of Steam reviews being positive.
  • However, some fans are frustrated that the game costs $49.99 despite being a port of a 14-year-old game.

Red Dead Redemption is finally available on PC, with Rockstar's classic title immediately boasting high player numbers and positive reviews. Originally released in 2010, the popularity of Red Dead Redemption has yet to dwindle, with fans eager to experience the action-adventure title yet again.

In early October, Rockstar Games announced that Red Dead Redemption would be coming to PC on October 29, prompting fans of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 title to immediately rejoice. A sequel to the lesser-known 2004 action-adventure game Red Dead Revolver for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, the 2010 title Red Dead Redemption received critical acclaim for its gameplay, narrative, and visuals, going on to sell over 23 million copies. That number is about to see a spike, as its long-awaited PC release is already proving to be a massive success on launch day.

Only hours after the game was launched on Steam, Red Dead Redemption pulled in over 8,000 concurrent players, beating out more recent heavy-hitters like Sonic X Shadow Generations, God of War Ragnarok, and Starfield. Reviews are also largely positive, with many players applauding the technical aspects of the port, noting that the title still retains its original spirit despite seeing some graphical updates. Of note, the PC version includes native 4K resolution, Ultrawide and Super Ultrawide support, adjustable draw distances, support for NVIDIA DLSS 3.7 and AMD FSR 3.0 upscaling, and more. As of this writing, 93% of Steam reviews for the title are positive.

Red Dead Redemption Sees a Concurrent Steam Player Count of 8,218 at Launch

While the game's presentation on PC has been applauded by fans, not everyone is pleased. Red Dead Redemption costs $49.99 on Steam, and many fans feel that this is an exorbitant price for a 14-year-old game. The Steam version does come bundled with the standalone Undead Nightmare expansion, but many fans still don't think this inclusion is enough to justify the high cost. Some players also criticized the PC version's controls, calling them clunky and asking for better mouse and keyboard support. Thankfully, Red Dead Redemption seems to run very well on the Steam Deck.

Although some fans of the original Red Dead Redemption are waiting for the title to go on sale before picking it up on PC, the immediate response to the long-awaited port has been incredibly positive. Rockstar's future seems bright, with a potential Grand Theft Auto 6 release in 2026 and a possible Red Dead Redemption 3 somewhere down the line. While the latter hasn't been confirmed, the franchise's dedicated community has never been more vocal about its desire for more Western adventures.
