Summary
- Red Dead Redemption 2 Collector's Edition resells for $1,300, sparking debate on its value.
- Gamers divided on spending $1,300, with some calling it overpriced for what it includes.
An eagle-eyed gamer has spotted Red Dead Redemption 2's Collector's Edition selling for a ridiculous price online, six years after the game's release. The overall sentiment was mixed over whether this Red Dead Redemption 2 Collector's Edition is worth the eye-watering price in 2024.
Gamers are no strangers to expensive special editions. For many years now, developers have attempted to entice players to buy the more expensive editions of their games with a mixture of in-game perks and real-life items. Sometimes, these editions represent solid value for money, while other times, they unfortunately don't. Perhaps the craziest example was Saint's Row 4's Super Dangerous Wad Wad Edition, which came in at a staggering $1 million. That included a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Virgin Galactic space flight, and trips to Dubai and Washington, D.C, among other things, so it's certainly not the norm.
While shopping around at Walmart for some Black Friday gaming deals, a Redditor stumbled upon a six-year-old relic somehow still in stock: Red Dead Redemption 2's Collector's Box. This themed metal box comes with a treasure map, an in-game weapons catalog, a pin set, playing cards, a collectible challenge coin, a bandana, 12 cigarette cards, and a double-sided puzzle. All in, the Collector's Box comes in at $1,300, an eye-watering price considering the value of the items. It isn't clear exactly why the price is so high, although it's likely because of the rarity of finding all the items together at once unopened.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Collector's Edition Costs $1,300
While some claimed they would purchase the Red Dead Redemption 2 Collector's Box if they had the spare cash, many felt that it did not represent great value for money, with one going as far as to call it "a box of junk," while another pointed out that people could instead "buy almost 3 real life Lancaster repeaters with that amount of money." Some of the items in the box are definitely cool collector's items, but $1,300 is definitely a steep price to pay, even if unopened versions of the box are difficult to come by nowadays.
Six years on from the release of the Red Dead Redemption 2 Collector's Box, and gamers are no closer to receiving Red Dead Redemption 3. Rockstar's workload on Grand Theft Auto 6 means that any development on a sequel is likely to be minimal at this point, but Rockstar notoriously keeps its cards close to its chest when it comes to things like this. In the meantime, the original Red Dead Redemption has been a big hit on Steam after its recent PC release, so it could be a good time to revisit the 2010 title.
