After the huge success of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar's next project in the pipeline is the highly anticipated GTA 6. To say gamers are excited about GTA 6 is an understatement, as analysts are predicting that it could completely transform the gaming industry. Only time will tell, but that indeed seems likely at this point, and after GTA 6 finally gets here, a lot of eyes will be focused on a Red Dead Redemption 2 follow-up.
Despite the game closing in on its seventh anniversary, RDR2 is still incredibly popular. Between its captivating story and rich, immersive world, Rockstar brought forth something truly special with RDR2, leaving many curious about what the next chapter could be like. Of course, Rockstar has yet to confirm RDR3, but if another game is ever announced, the wait may be even harder than GTA 6.

GTA-Likes Have Been Able to Hold Over Many Fans
It's incredibly hard to capture the special Rockstar formula, but many developers have tried to replicate the feeling of GTA over the years. The Mafia franchise and the Watchdogs series are popular GTA-likes, and while they don't hit the same highs as Rockstar's crime-filled universe, they're at least solid equivalents, for the most part.
Some recent GTA-likes that have potentially helped gamers pass the time ahead of GTA 6's launch are titles like Watchdogs: Legion and MindsEye. Now, it's important to note that MindsEye is one of the worst-reviewed games of the year, but it still shows that an effort is still being made to replicate the GTA vibe. When it comes to Red Dead Redemption, it's much harder to find a similar spark.

There Simply Aren't Many Games Like the Red Dead Redemption Franchise
Even though Mafia is generally considered a GTA-inspired series, the franchise's most recent entry, Mafia: The Old Country, is the closest gamers have gotten to RDR2's essence in a while. It's not like Red Dead Redemption is the only series set in the Old West, either. Titles like Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, Evil West, and Gun have all been staples in the genre, but Red Dead Redemption still stands alone as a unique franchise that has yet to be truly replicated.
For those who are wanting more RDR2, there simply aren't that many games that feel suited to help scratch that itch. Ghost of Yotei has promising horse-riding mechanics and introduces matchlock guns to the series, but it's unlikely to be similar to RDR2 in any major way.
Red Dead Online recently added its first major update in years with Strange Tales of the West, giving fans an extra dose of Wild West content.
Red Dead Redemption 3 Could Potentially Be Years Away
There's no way to know for sure what's going on at Rockstar, but with the studio so busy with a game as massive as GTA 6, it's hard to imagine that RDR3 is far along in production, if at all. There have been reports that Rockstar is working on other projects other than GTA 6, but it seems unlikely that it's RDR3. By the time GTA 6 gets here, it will have been 13 years since its predecessor launched, so there's no telling how long RDR3 could take. On the bright side, RDR1 and RDR2 are games worth replaying multiple times, but there is still the downside of nothing similar to look forward to.
