Red Dead Redemption is now available on Nintendo Switch and PS4. The PS5 will support the PS4 version through backwards compatibility. Xbox gamers can still buy the backwards-compatible version as part of a bundle with the sequel. Long-time fans and first-timers can expect the same quality story mode and wide breadth of activities befitting a Rockstar Studios game. One of these activities is Texas Hold Em poker. John Marston can gamble at certain saloons throughout the game and earn money. Players can make a bit of their own luck by carefully cheating. This guide will explain how to cheat at poker in Red Dead Redemption.
Unlock the Elegant Suit
John Marston can equip multiple outfits throughout his journey. Unlike the sequel, players need to complete certain tasks to obtain these clothing items. The Elegant Suit is a unique outfit that allows players to cheat while playing poker. Fans must first play a game of poker to see the entry for it in John's journal. Poker can be played early on at MacFarlane's Ranch or the Armadillo saloon.
Once players have it in their journal they can track the location of the Elegant Suit scrap. Thankfully this outfit only requires one piece to complete it. Ride to Thieves' Landing to the east of MacFarlane's Ranch. This area will always have dreary weather and is filled with unsavory outlaws. If John has high honor, NPCs will challenge him to duels regularly and shop prices will be higher. The Elegant Suit scrap is located at the tailor shop next to the gunsmith and below the town doctor. Look carefully at the map as the other icons may block it out.
If the tailor isn't in his shop wait a few minutes and he may show up. The shop closes at night and John may need to sleep at the Thieves' Landing safehouse which can be purchased for $100. Players can also move outside the town and use a campsite to sleep and pass a few hours of in-game time. Buy the Elegant Suit scrap for $70, then equip the outfit at any safe house bed.
How to Cheat
Go to a poker game wearing the Elegant Suit to begin cheating. In Texas Hold Em the deck is passed from player to player after each hand. John can only initiate cheating when he is dealing the cards. On the Xbox/PS4 press the Y/Triangle button to begin cheating. Use the X button on the Nintendo Switch version. Doing so will bring up a meter onscreen. Carefully keep the cursor in the center of the meter using the left stick. John will sneak a card from the deck up his sleeve. This card will be shown on the left side of the screen.
As the game progresses pressing the cheat button again will allow players to slip the card into their hand. Press the button then tilt the left stick in the direction of one of the two cards that needs to be replaced. Balance the meter again and the hand will be changed. The replaced card will then be in John's sleeve instead.
When balancing the cursor make sure it is in the center as long as possible. If the cursor glows red for too long, John will be caught cheating by one of the other poker players. This will result in a duel with that NPC and the poker game will end.
