If there's one game from the last decade that deserves its reputation as an instant classic, it's probably Red Dead Redemption 2. The release of Rockstar's western epic was a watershed moment for the video game industry at large, and the game became a shining example of what could be achieved in the gaming medium with a virtually unlimited budget. On paper, Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't that different from the other titles in Rockstar's catalog, at least gameplay-wise, but its emphasis on realism and attention to detail puts it leagues above some of the other open-world games out there. There really aren't a lot of other titles just like it in the world of gaming.
Although Red Dead Redemption 2 is still regarded as a masterpiece by many players, it's worth noting that the game is starting to show its age. As hard as it may be to believe, it is nearly 7 years old, and Rockstar's next title, GTA 6, looks like it will surpass the game in a lot of ways. Red Dead Redemption 2 still has a pretty active playerbase on both Steam and consoles, but the game could use a shot in the arm to bring its popularity to new heights. One way Rockstar could do this, of course, is by releasing a Switch 2 port of RDR2.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Next-Gen Upgrade Wish List
Rumors of a next-gen upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2 are gathering a lot of pace, and such a project would have to pack a serious punch.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Deserves to Come to Nintendo Switch 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 Hasn't Been Ported to Any New Platforms Since 2019
Red Dead Redemption 2 was released on PS4 and Xbox One in 2018, and like most Rockstar titles, it was brought to PC a year later. Since then, however, the game hasn't been ported to any other platforms, not even current-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Because Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best-selling single-player games of all time, many fans have been rather puzzled by Rockstar's lack of support for the title. Fortunately, though, it seems like the company is planning to release some new versions of the game in the near future.
A Switch 2 Port of RDR2 is Apparently On the Way, Along With a Next-Gen Upgrade Patch
Gamereactor and Nintenduo reported back in May 2025 that Rockstar is gearing up to release a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 within the next few months. This new version of the game, they said, will supposedly launch alongside a next-gen upgrade patch for Sony and Microsoft's current-gen consoles. While many initially approached these reports with skepticism, they were given more credibility by the trusted insider NateTheHate, who corroborated the existence of an RDR2 Switch 2 port on his YouTube podcast.
If these rumors are true, then the Red Dead Redemption 2 ports couldn't be coming at a better time. Despite having a very successful launch, the Nintendo Switch 2 is lacking a bunch of major third-party content at the moment, and a major title from Rockstar Games, like this one, would fill the gap quite well. The first Red Dead Redemption is already available on the Nintendo Switch 2 via backwards compatibility, so Nintendo fans can catch up with the series' story before the rumored launch of its sequel.
RDR2 and Other Rockstar Games Would Probably Do Well on Nintendo Switch 2
While Red Dead Redemption 2 is a fairly demanding game, it would probably run just fine on Nintendo's hybrid console, considering that it runs not only on the Steam Deck, but on last-gen hardware, as well. The game would likely be locked at 30 FPS on Switch 2, just like it currently is on PS4 and Xbox One, but the ability to play it on the go would probably be enough to encourage some players to buy the game on Nintendo's console over other systems. Maybe if the rumored RDR2 port sells well, this will incentivize Rockstar Games to bring some of its other iconic games to Nintendo's platform. GTA 5, Red Dead Revolver, and GTA 4 would complement Red Dead Redemption 2 perfectly on the Switch 2, so it'd be great if this happens.
