It's now been nearly seven years since Red Dead Redemption 2 launched and, with it, a thoughtful and unforgiving story about the harshness of the Wild West era. Red Dead Redemption 2 is still hailed by many gamers and critics as one of the strongest stories in gaming, but since then, it's been unclear what Rockstar plans for the franchise.

Right now, Rockstar has its hands full working on GTA 6, but there could potentially be a huge Red Dead Redemption announcement on the horizon. Rob Wiethoff, the actor who plays John Marston, made some bold claims in a recent livestream. While playing Red Dead Redemption on Twitch, Wiethoff said he had "such exciting news. I can't share it with you right now and it's absolutely killing me. Not as soon as tomorrow, but definitely before Friday."

Grand Theft Auto Fans Think GTA 6's Lucia and Jason Look A Lot Like Red Dead Redemption 2 Characters

Grand Theft Auto 6 fans point out interesting similarities between protagonists Lucia and Jason and a pair of characters from Red Dead Redemption 2.

What Could Red Dead Redemption's Rob Wiethoff Be Teasing?

To be clear, Wiethoff's words definitely seem to imply that it is Red Dead or, at the very least, Rockstar-related. It would be odd for such an announcement to come this way, however, and it could simply be an exciting role that is similar to Red Dead. Fans should keep expectations in check, but who knows, stranger things have happened.

Red Dead Redemption Could Get the Live-Action Treatment

In recent years, live-action adaptations of video games have been all the rage. Between HBO's The Last of Us, The Witcher on Netflix, and Amazon Prime's Fallout series, Hollywood is taking note of the growing popularity of video games. There are even more projects on the horizon, too. Amazon has plans for a God of War series, and Ghost of Tsushima is getting its own movie that is set to be directed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski.

With so many live-action adaptations underway, it wouldn't be surprising if the Red Dead Redemption franchise got the same treatment. Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2 are incredibly cinematic games, so they would likely easily translate into a movie or TV series. Whether it's a remake of the games or a spin-off series set within the Red Dead Redemption universe, a live-action adaptation definitely seems like a possibility.

Season 2 of Fallout has secured a December premiere.

Other Possible Announcements

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Switch 2
  • Undead Nightmare 2
  • RDR1 remake

There have been rumors that Red Dead Redemption 2 could come to the Switch 2 this year. While exciting, it's not exactly thrilling enough for Rob Wiethoff to tease it so much. All that build-up for a Switch 2 port may prove to be anticlimactic for some fans, although that's possible either way. It's also possible that Red Dead Redemption 2 could get its own version of Undead Nightmare. Since it's been seven years, this may be a pipe dream, but what remains certain is that Wiethoff believes that fans of the Western series are going to get big news sometime this week. These smaller scale projects are more likely, but ultimately it remains to be seen.

Long-Awaited Confirmation of Red Dead Redemption 3

Confirmation of Red Dead Redemption 3 would be the best-case scenario, although the most unlikely of the bunch and something that should not be held against the actor or company if fans choose to believe beyond belief. There were eight years between the first Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2, and at this rate, a third game is bound to have an even bigger gap between releases. As exciting as confirmation of Red Dead Redemption 3 would be, it bears repeating: this is the least likely thing of the year. GTA 6 is taking up much of Rockstar's time at the moment, so it would be unrealistic for the developer to have enough time to work on two massive games..

However, Rockstar could still have a big surprise up its sleeve. Rockstar has shadow-dropped both trailers for GTA 6, so a surprise Red Dead Redemption 3 announcement would definitely be on brand for the developer. This is still more than likely wishful thinking. If such a sequel was revealed, though, it would be one of the biggest announcements of 2025, which is saying a lot, since the year has already been filled with surprises.

One of the biggest questions surrounding RDR3 is who would be the main character. There have been theories that it could be Sadie Adler, while a prequel following Dutch could be possible.

Ultimately, fans just have to wait and find out, but two things are clear. The hype is real, and fans love this franchise.
