The ESRB has just added a new rating page for the first Red Dead Redemption, one that suggests the game could be coming to Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in the near future. While it may not be as shiny as its 2018 sequel, Red Dead Redemption still offers a rich narrative and a riveting open world that holds up surprisingly well 15 years after its initial launch.
Released in May 2010 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Red Dead Redemption tells the story of John Marston, a former outlaw who's forced to hunt down his old gang mates to make up for his past sins. While Red Dead Redemption received a PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch port in 2023, and Xbox One and Series X/S users can play the Xbox 360 version of the game via backwards compatibility, there's no way to play the first Red Dead Redemption natively on current-gen consoles.
Red Dead Redemption Could Be Coming to Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S
That could all be about to change. The ESRB has just posted a new listing for Red Dead Redemption, one that stands separately from the 2023 Nintendo Switch and PS4 port, the 2024 PC port, and the original 2010 Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 ratings. This new Red Dead Redemption ESRB rating lists "PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series" as its dedicated platforms, suggesting that a current-gen port of the first Red Dead game could be launching soon.
The content description attached to this new Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S rating is identical to the one created for the PC, Switch, and PS4 ports, which implies that the content within this potential upcoming current-gen port is the same as those versions. This shared content description also references engaging in gun fights with "zombies," which would suggest that Red Dead Redemption's Undead Nightmare DLC would be packaged in with these current-gen ports, just as it was on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
After the recent delay of Grand Theft Auto 6, it feels as though Rockstar is going out of its way to keep itself in fans' good graces. Grand Theft Auto 5 is coming back to PlayStation Plus Extra this month, and the release of a current-gen Red Dead Redemption port could make a lot of fans happy. Of course, there's even more that Rockstar could do to win over fans who are disappointed with GTA 6's recent delay. Though a native PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S version of Red Dead 1 would be welcome, fans have been asking for a Red Dead Redemption 2 current-gen update for years now.
