Summary

  • Despite its initial negative reception, Bethesda is committed to improving Redfall, acknowledging past games like The Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76 that have been enhanced after rocky launches.
  • Redfall's availability on Xbox Game Pass is a driving force behind the dedication to improving the game, as it will be accessible to players for years to come.
  • Multiple updates have already been made to address the game's problems, but there is still work to be done to make Redfall a more satisfying experience for players.

Bethesda is not giving up on Redfall, the co-op vampire shooter that launched earlier this year to largely negative reviews from fans and critics alike. Prior to its launch, Redfall was one of the most-hyped new Xbox console exclusive games. Developer Arkane's reputation led fans to believe that Redfall would be another high-quality FPS, but unfortunately, the game fell completely short of expectations.

Redfall released to mostly negative reviews, with a lot of complaints about its performance, glitches, and uninspiring gameplay. To say that Redfall missed the mark would be an understatement. Redfall's poor reception saw interest in the game plummet almost immediately, but despite this, it seems Bethesda isn't giving up on it. According to Bethesda's Pete Hines, major Redfall improvements are in the pipeline.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Pete Hines pointed out how some Bethesda-published games from the past have been improved after a rocky launch, like The Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76. "Redfall is no different for us," Hines explained. Hines didn't elaborate on specific improvements fans can expect from Redfall besides the anticipated 60 FPS update, but he did say, "We're going to get it to be a good game."

Part of the reason why Bethesda is dedicated to getting Redfall to "good game" status is the fact that it's available on Xbox Game Pass. Since Redfall is a first-party Xbox game, it will remain on Xbox Game Pass forever, and so, as Hines puts it, "people 10 years from now" will potentially be signing up for the service and trying out the game. Its availability through Xbox Game Pass could be the driving force that inspires the developers to right the ship when it comes to Redfall, though time will tell if these efforts will be successful.

Some improvements have already been made to Redfall in the wake of its disastrous launch. There have been multiple Redfall updates that have addressed some of the game's biggest problems and improved the experience for anyone still playing it. Redfall still has a long way to go, and it will be interesting to see what else is potentially added to the game besides the 60 FPS update to make it a more worthwhile experience.

Fans shouldn't worry about Redfall keeping Arkane from moving on to a new project, though. It seems as though Arkane is working on a new game that will be more in-line with the titles that put it on the map, though more details on Arkane's next project are not available at the time of this writing.

Redfall is out now for PC and Xbox Series X.
