- Astro Bot has won over 100 Game of the Year awards and continues to add new content.
Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently praised Sony’s Astro Bot. Awarded Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2024, Astro Bot is a 3D platformer developed by Sony and Team Asobi, and it had strong inspiration from games made by Nintendo, such as the Super Mario Bros. Franchise.
Astro Bot was nominated for seven categories at The Game Awards 2024, and it won four of them. Apart from taking home Game of the Year, the platformer also won Best Game Direction, Best Family Game, and Best Action/Adventure. With strong competitors such as Black Myth: Wukong and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Sony’s title stood out due to its quality and has won many awards since then.
New Astro Bot Level Has Been Revealed
PlayStation reveals a brand-new speedrunning level for Astro Bot, teasing more content coming to the platformer game sometime in 2025.
Now, Astro Bot won another Game of the Year award at the 14th Annual New York Game Awards and, according to IGN, the title even received glowing praise from the former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. When praising the 3D platformer, Fils-Aime said that "I have to admit it, Astro Bot almost outdid Nintendo at its own game." It’s not so surprising to see Fils-Aime praising Astro Bot when considering how Super Mario Bros. Greatly inspired the game. Astro Bot’s director, Nicolas Doucet, even said so when the game won the GOTY award last year, citing his childhood playing Nintendo’s famous platformer.
Former Nintendo of America's President Praises Astro Bot
I have to admit it, Astro Bot almost outdid Nintendo at its own game.
While some people may have been surprised to see Astro Bot winning the GOTY, the game has been showing an incredible track record in award shows since then. Astro Bot won over 100 Game of the Year awards, becoming the most-awarded platformer in history, surpassing the previous record held by It Takes Two. While it’s not as many awards as Baldur’s Gate 3 or The Last of Us Part 2, which currently stand at 288 and 326 Game of the Year wins respectively, it’s an incredible number.
Since the win, Astro Bot has continued to keep its experience fresh by adding more content for the player base. Not only did Astro Bot recently gain several Speedrun levels, with the latest one being announced recently at the PlayStation Tournaments XP event, but there are rumors that Astro Bot could get even more content soon. According to a now-deleted tweet from Arrowhead Game Studios boss Johan Pilestedt, some new bots could be added to Astro Bot soon, including one dressed as Tekken antagonist Heihachi. Obviously, these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, as there’s still no official confirmation from Team Asobi or Sony.
