Sloclap, the developers of Sifu, are making a new third-person soccer game called Rematch, and it's proving to be quite popular. In the last few weeks, Slocap has held closed betas for the game on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, which have attracted soccer fans from around the world. On Steam, the latest beta test for Rematch had over 159,000 concurrent players, putting it among the top 10 most played games on the platform at the time. The beta was so successful, in fact, that it surpassed the peak active player counts of other major soccer titles, such as EA Sports FC 25 and FIFA 22.

Rematch is currently scheduled to be released on June 19, 2025, less than four years after the debut of Sifu. Since the game's launch is only a few weeks away, Sloclap does not plan to hold more beta tests for it. Even though that may be disappointing for some, there's still a lot to look forward to in the final game. Rematch is going to include several different modes and arenas at launch, and it will receive tons of seasonal content in the coming months.

Should You Play Rematch With a Keyboard or Controller?

Rematch requires a lot of fast, precise inputs, so many players are torn between using a controller or a keyboard for their matches.

Rematch is a New Sports Game from the Creators of Sifu

Rematch Has an Arcadey Gameplay Loop and Several Multiplayer Modes

Although Rematch is a soccer game at its core, it's very different from other titles like FIFA. Instead of having a realistic art style, the game features a stylized aesthetic, somewhat similar to Sifu. In addition, it doesn't contain any real-life teams, players, or locations. Furthermore, Rematch takes a more arcadey approach to gameplay, unlike its soccer contemporaries. Although the basic components of soccer are present in the game, it doesn't include any penalties, fouls, offsides, or mid-game breaks. Matches in Rematch are fast-paced and concise; they usually last around 7 to 8 minutes.

Although Rematch's official description labels it as a 5v5 multiplayer game, the title can be played in various different ways. According to Sloclap, there will be four multiplayer modes available for the game at launch. These include 3v3, 4v4, ranked 5v5, and normal 5v5 modes. While the size of a team cannot be changed mid-match, the roles that each player takes can be. In Rematch, all players can swiftly switch between attack, defense, and goalkeeper positions depending on the state of the game. The first person to enter the box of their respective team becomes a goalkeeper, but if they leave their position, then someone else can take their place.

Rematch Won't Have a Lot of Single-Player Content At Launch, But It May Be Added in the Future

As one would expect from a modern soccer game, Rematch is a mostly multiplayer-focused title. The game features very little single-player content, aside from some practice and free play modes that can be played offline. Although Sloclap does not plan to release a solo campaign for the game, it does intend to implement an offline mode with AI-controlled teammates sometime in 2026. The company has stated that there may be even more single-player content added to Rematch in the future, such as single-player workshops.

Rematch will be available at no extra cost to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers at launch.

Compared to Most AAA Titles, Rematch is Fairly Cheap

Although many AAA games these days cost upwards of $80, Rematch has a relatively low price point. The Standard version of the game costs only $30, while the Pro and Elite editions cost $40 and $50, respectively. The more expensive versions of Rematch primarily contain additional cosmetics, as well as Captain Pass upgrade tickets. Players who purchase Rematch's Pro and Elite editions right now will be able to play the game three days early, too. Even though Rematch is a paid title, it's worth noting that it also contains microtransactions. Sloclap has said, however, that the items that players can purchase in Rematch will primarily be cosmetic-focused and will not have any pay-to-win elements.
