The number of Rematch players is steadily declining. Sloclap released Rematch in June 2025, bringing players one of the most anticipated titles of the year. With a unique idea, the creators of Sifu made a game that takes a new approach to a very popular sport.
Rematch is a soccer game without fouls, breaks, or offsides. Because of this, the matches have a frenetic pace, and since the characters have no statistics, victory in this third-person game depends solely on the player's strategy and skill. Another detail that sets the game apart is the stadiums in which the matches take place, which can be traditional stadiums or locations such as the desert and a forest. Sloclap promised a refreshing experience, but new numbers point to an unfortunate situation for Rematch.
All Rematch Mechanics, Explained
Rematch brings a new experience for soccer fans to dive into. Here are all the mechanics explained to get the most out of them while playing.
Rematch Player Count in Steady Decline
After Rematch made impressive numbers at launch, SteamCharts reports that the player base dropped 60.32% in August. As a result, the peak of 50,434 players reported in July fell to 20,546 in August. The difference that SteamCharts shows in the average number of players is also striking: from 20,256 registered in July to just 8,037 in August. According to GameTrends, reported by True Achievements, the number of Rematch players on Xbox fell 78.4% from its peak. Meanwhile, the number of PlayStation 5 players decreased to 60.1% from its peak in the second week.
This scenario is quite different from what was previously seen, with Rematch debuting in eighth place on Xbox, reaching sixth place, and selling over a million units in its first week. Despite this, it didn't take long for players to have problems with the soccer game, such as netcode and lag, making gameplay inconsistent. Crashes, freezes, poor performance, inconsistent matchmaking, and hackers sabotaging matches also became part of the frustrating experience for the community. While later patches improved the netcode, and Rematch finally added crossplay in its third major update, players still suffer from issues, such as the one documented by Reddit user Sea-Satisfaction3668.
Sloclap continues to work actively to fix the problems plaguing Rematch players. In the September 11 patch, the developers corrected an issue that prevented players from moving correctly when using a keyboard and mouse. They also fixed a bug that was preventing the final battle pass rewards from unlocking correctly. With Rematch having a content roadmap to deliver in the coming months, players hope that the game will regain its shine and offer a better experience.
