From the outside, Remnant: From the Ashes may simply look like Dark Souls with guns, but players are quickly finding out that this challenging game has a lot more going on under the hood. One of the biggest differences is the element of randomness and RNG that players experience during a playthrough as certain NPCs and items may not appear where they're expected. Experiences for players will likely be very different, also adding a fair bit of replayability considering each run may be a bit different.
Guns and ranged combat is also a huge piece of Remnant: From the Ashes as players can utilize precision shots to weaken the herd before the game attempts to swarm the player with enemies. This is also evident during boss fights, which add a tactical layer by adding basic level enemies to the battle. These fights make up a sizable portion of the experience, especially when taking on a character known as The Dreamer in Ward 17.
In order to overcome this final challenge, players will need to stay on their toes as the fight itself is actually split into two phases that have their own mechanics and challenges to figure out. Here's how to take down the Dreamer and its alternate Nightmare form. Keep in mind that since this is the final boss of the game, spoilers may follow.
Phase One - The Dreamer
When the fight begins, players will first be facing off against a character known as The Dreamer. This enemy appears to be in their pajamas or a hospital outfit and comes with four mechanical arms reminiscent of the Spider-Man villain, Doctor Octopus. Thankfully, this phase is fairly straightforward as the boss attacks are easily telegraphed and can be damaged quickly.
Just like past boss fights in Remnant: From the Ashes, The Dreamer is supported by basic enemies, but players should focus fire on the boss as much as possible as it takes damage very quickly. During phase one, players should dodge The Dreamer's rush attack which also causes its arms to swirl around. In addition, it has a ground pound attack that fires an energy wave in a straight line, as well as a ranged attack that launches projectiles into the air and at the player. All of these attacks are fairly easy to dodge thanks to how the character telegraphs them before hand, so continue to focus fire until phase two begins.
Lighter armor may also be a benefit here as well as the dodging animation is a bit faster than it is with heavier armor types. Either way, make sure to have gear and weapons upgraded as much as possible with Forged Iron to increase survivability as well. Players should also aim for its head as much as possible in order to score extra damage.
Phase Two - The Nightmare
When phase two begins, The Dreamer becomes The Nightmare. The character takes on a brand new form and it is immune to all incoming damage. At this point, players should simply focus on avoiding Nightmare's projectile attacks only. Eventually, Nightmare will begin a spin animation, which transports the player to a shadow realm of sorts, which also does damage over time to the player. The Bloodwort item, which restores a player's health over time is a good counter to this.
To leave this shadow realm, players only need to kill one enemy to open an exit portal. However, players should try to stay inside this shadow realm for as long as possible as killing enemies adds a damage buff against Nightmare. The more kills a player can get before leaving, the stronger the buff becomes. It's an interesting risk/reward system that will be different for everyone.
After leaving through the portal, players should focus fire on Nightmare's chest to do big damage and eventually exposing The Dreamer again. A beam weapon or a gun with a high rate of fire like the Chicago Typewriter really come in handy here. The process repeats itself until Nightmare's damage is completely drained and the fight is over.
Rewards
With the battle now at an end, players receive three major items: Dreamer's Mana, the Orb of Undoing, and the Mind's Eye. Dreamer's Mana is an ingredient that is needed to create the long gun known as the Repulsor. As the name implies, The Orb of Undoing can be used to completely reset all character traits to use again in a new build or whatever the player feels like. Finally, the Mind's Eye is a trait that increases ranged damage by 1.25 percent for each trait point spent on it.
