In a move that surprises no one, production company FX Productions has confirmed that the critically acclaimed series Reservation Dogs has been renewed for a third season by streaming platform Hulu. The renewal news comes a whole week before the show's second season is set to air its final episode on the 28th of September.

Reservation Dogs is a comedic teen drama that is distinctly Indigenous American in its plot and production, with cast, crew, production team, and even showrunner roles all furnished almost entirely by indigenous talent. The Hulu series itself is no different, as the plot tells a compelling coming-of-age story centered around 4 indigenous teens living on a reservation in rural Oklahoma, telling their stories in the wake of their friend’s death a year before the start-off point of the series. The show features memorable performances by main stars D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Paulina Alexis, Lane Factor, and Devery Jacobs, who recently landed a part in the upcoming project Echo from Disney Plus.

Akin to the first season of Reservation Dogs, the second has also been a massive critical success, with fans greatly enjoying the project’s unique premise and point of view. As such, it was no surprise that Hulu and FX Productions, who also renewed dark comedy The Bear earlier in the year, agreed on a third season before the second airs its finale. Notable indigenous filmmaker and project director Sterlin Harjo released a statement expressing his joy at the decision, saying, “I couldn’t be more proud of this show that I created with my friend Taika Waititi. It was born out of a conversation in Taika’s kitchen and has now made its way into the lives of people across the world. The love for season two has been outstanding. Thank you to FX for ordering season three, excited to bring you more laughter and love from the Rez. Ahoooo!”

The President of Original Programming at FX, Nick Grad, also expressed his satisfaction with the move, reiterating that Reservation Dogs was a source of pride for everyone involved. In addition to Harjo, the series was also co-created by accomplished Thor: Love and Thunder writer and director Taika Waititi, whose work on the Marvel Studios project highlighted a possible new direction for the Disney-owned franchise. Both men serve as executive producers alongside Garrett Basch, with Kathryn Dean taking on the role of producer.

Fans who may have been anxious about the Reservation Dogs' future as the second season wound to a close can now rest easy, with the announcement indicating that production on the next installment will begin sooner rather than later. The project is also near and dear to Harjo and co-creator Waititi, who will give it his all despite being slated to work on a plethora of diverse projects, including writing and directing a Star Wars project for Disney that was announced in 2020.

The renewal of Reservation Dogs and other similar successes have been a big win for Hulu, which is currently set to be bought out by Disney and integrated into Disney Plus after current Hulu co-owner Comcast follows through on its commitment to sell by or before 2024. Considering that Disney already has a controlling stake in the company, the decision was likely as much theirs as it was FXs, possibly signalling security for the show’s future.

Reservation Dogs seasons 1-2 are now available on Hulu.
