Summary

  • A Resident Evil 1 remake is currently not in the works at Capcom, according to an insider.
  • The rumored remakes of Resident Evil 0 and Code: Veronica are possibly coming first.
  • Two years have passed since the RE4 remake's release, so a new game may be revealed soon.

Many Resident Evil fans have been clamoring for an RE2-style ground-up remake of the original game that started it all, but according to a trusted insider, it may be a while before that becomes a possibility. Since the release of the Resident Evil 2 remake in 2019, the franchise has essentially been split in two, with publisher and developer Capcom having released a string of remakes alongside the continuation of the mainline first-person series. While games on both sides of this new Resident Evil fence have been successful, it's the remakes, Resident Evil 2 and RE4 specifically, that have garnered critical acclaim.

The future of Resident Evil has been shrouded in rumors recently. The long-rumored Rebecca Chambers-led Resident Evil Revelations successor, thought to be called Resident Evil Outrage and exclusive to Nintendo Switch, was reportedly canceled back in 2022. Much larger rumors swirl around Resident Evil 9, the next big mainline entry initially thought to be open-world. Perhaps some of the longest-running rumors have to do with Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 0 being the next two remakes. Shortly after the release of the RE4 remake two years ago, speculation started about a remake of Resident Evil 5, but those rumors were quickly squashed in favor of Code: Veronica and RE0.

Resident Evil: One Odd Storytelling Trick Should Die With This Character

Despite an ambitious attempt to revamp Resident Evil's approach to storytelling, future games might be better off retiring one character archetype.

A well-known and trusted Resident Evil insider has disappointing news for fans who've been wishing for a Resident Evil 1 remake. On Twitter, Dusk Golem expressed that a remake of the original Resident Evil game isn't currently in the works at Capcom. Furthermore, Golem went on to say that it's still a possibility down the road, but only after the rumored Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 0 remakes come out first.

RE1 Remake May Not Come Until After Rumored Code: Veronica and RE0 Remakes

While potentially having to wait two full remake cycles before Resident Evil 1's remake seems like a long road, it's worth noting how much quicker Capcom has been releasing its remakes compared to the mainline installments. The Resident Evil 3 remake came out just one year after Resident Evil 2, though many believe it's because the much smaller and shorter RE3 was originally intended to be DLC for RE2. Still, there's a chance that the development cycles of the Code: Veronica and RE0 remakes could end up being shorter, but with just how extensive and detailed these Resident Evil remakes have been, this isn't likely to be the case. Resident Evil 1 still remains one of the most fan-requested remakes of the franchise, so Capcom may more than likely get around to it at some point in the future; it seems like simply a matter of when.

With over two years having already passed since Resident Evil 4, Capcom seems primed to announce the next RE game soon, whether a remake or the much-anticipated Resident Evil 9. Some even believe Capcom could be making an appearance next month at either Summer Game Fest, Xbox's showcase or the rumored PlayStation event, so Resident Evil fans should stay tuned in the coming weeks.
