Summary

  • The OG Resident Evil 2 is coming to GOG on August 27.
  • Quality-of-life improvements and full controller support included.
  • Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is on the way as well.

The original Resident Evil 2 will be re-released on August 27. While modern fans may be most familiar with the Resident Evil 2 remake that was released five years ago, the original RE2 is still considered one of the very best survival-horror games ever made. Unfortunately, those interested in playing the original Resident Evil 2, or any of the classic Resident Evil games for that matter, have been largely unable to do so on modern hardware - until recently, at least.

Recently, Capcom and GOG teamed up to bring the original Resident Evil game back. The original Resident Evil hit GOG with quality-of-life improvements and earned rave reviews from PC gamers. At the time the original Resident Evil was confirmed for GOG, it was also revealed that there were plans to revive the OG Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis as well.

Resident Evil enthusiasts are still waiting to hear when exactly they'll be able to play Resident Evil 3: Nemesis again, but they can now safely mark their calendars for Resident Evil 2. As confirmed by Capcom and GOG, the Resident Evil 2 re-release will be available on August 27. Like with the first game, Resident Evil 2 will feature "compatibility with modern systems" and "full modern controller support" with additional but unspecified quality-of-life improvements as well. It's unclear if the original version of Resident Evil 2 will make its way to other platforms, so anyone interested will have to play it on PC through GOG for now.

When is Resident Evil 2 Coming to GOG?

  • Resident Evil 2 PC re-release date: August 27

Capcom has a tendency to release multiple versions of its games, and the same holds true for Resident Evil 2. Considering this, some may be wondering which version of Resident Evil 2 is coming to the platform on August 27. It's been confirmed that the Resident Evil 2 GOG port is based on the 1999 Windows 98 version of the survival-horror game as opposed the 2006 Windows XP version that featured higher-quality cutscenes. This may be a disappointment for some fans, but it's unlikely to be a deal-breaker for nostalgic RE enthusiasts who are excited about a return trip to Raccoon City.

The original Resident Evil game hit GOG in June, and so if that pattern holds up, fans should be able to expect Resident Evil 3: Nemesis to be available in October or thereabouts. All three games can be purchased individually for $9.99 a pop, but fans also have the option of paying $24.99 for the entire classic Resident Evil trilogy.
