Earlier this month, many fans got their first opportunity to play Capcom's remake of Resident Evil 2  with a one-shot demo that was downloaded by over one million players. This figure indicated that the new version of the survival horror classic was on track to have a strong retail performance upon release, however its sales figures in the UK have not quite met those established by the last entry in the franchise, Resident Evil 7.

Reports indicate that Resident Evil 2 Remake sold approximately 18% less in its release week when compared to 2017's Resident Evil 7. That said, it is important to note that Resident Evil 7  launched on a Tuesday while Capcom's newest remake released on a Friday, which, of course, means that the timeframes these figures have been tracked over are slightly different.

Furthermore, despite not performing as well as the last numbered Resident Evil  title, Resident Evil 2 Remake  still had an excellent weekend, and it topped the UK sales charts. Some may find it interesting to know that the original version of Resident Evil 2 also debuted at number one in the UK when it was released in 1998.

It has been additionally stated that PlayStation 4 was, far and away, the preferred platform for players purchasing Resident Evil 2 Remake  this release weekend. Specifically, sales of the game for Sony's console constituted 74% of its total sales in the UK.

The release of Resident Evil 2 Remake  meant the end of the reign of New Super Mario Bros U  at the top of charts, with Nintendo's platformer port showing up at number four this week. Red Dead Redemption 2  and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 continued to have strong showings, sitting at number two and three respectively.

There are also some potentially surprising titles on the UK charts for the week ending on January 26. For instance, Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto V has still found its way to spot nine more than five years after its release.

Critical response to Resident Evil 2 Remake  has been solid, and its sales suggest there are many players that are very interested in these types of remakes. While it may not have toppled Resident Evil 7  in its first week, it certainly seems that Capcom's newest release is already a hit.

Resident Evil 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
