Over the past few years, there have been so many great horror games released, but arguably the most impressive of the bunch is the Resident Evil 4 remake. Taking what is widely considered to be one of the best video games of all time and modernizing the systems and graphics, the game delivers a truly next-generational survival horror experience that has very little to compete with it.

Upcoming Horror Games With First-Person Exploration

If you love getting up close and personal with horror games, these games may be up your alley.

But the future looks bright, as many upcoming horror games are looking to emulate that same gritty feel across a range of settings, narratives, and times. Some take a lot of inspiration from the RE series, while others are looking to carve out a place for themselves within the genre, whilst still delivering a familiar feel that keeps players coming back for more.

Tormented Souls 2 sends players back into the shoes of Caroline Walker, this time to a secluded villa full of terrifying creatures and mind-bending puzzles. The gameplay feels a bit more old-school RE, but it has all the modern graphics and technical improvements that make it feel closer to the modern remakes.

There are tight corridors, eerie crypts, and enough items to collect for players to be searching for a lifetime. It's the perfect game for players who want to experience something familiar in the horror genre, but with a whole new setting and story that sets it apart from its inspiration.

ILL is a realistic first-person survival horror experience that never holds back. Developed by a team with deep roots in horror cinema and interactive storytelling, it places players inside a decaying research fort where an unnatural evil has birthed grotesque aberrations that fill every corridor and shadow.

Upcoming Horror Games With Ridiculous Mechanics

These upcoming horror games stand to get pretty creative with their mechanics. Fans may want to keep an eye on these titles.

Unlike many titles that only lean on cheap shocks, ILL grounds its horror in realism. Monsters can be mutilated with disturbing detail, limbs can be torn apart, and every sound of suffering resonates through a binaural audio system that puts players inside the terror. Combined with unpredictable enemy behaviors, realistic physics, and strategic weapon management, ILL aims to do for first-person horror what Resident Evil 4 did for over-the-shoulder survival combat

Rootmare

Blending Horror With Anime-Style Visuals

  • Release Date: To Be Announced
  • Developer: Agate

What begins as a tropical paradise quickly descends into botanical hell in Rootmare. The game sets its stage within the COSMIC facility, once a shining beacon of the entertainment and beauty industry, now overrun by grotesque plant-zombie hybrids born from a mysterious outbreak.

Like Resident Evil 4, Rootmare thrives on atmosphere, scarcity, and the constant struggle between fight or flight. Every encounter tests not just reflexes but judgment, as limited resources and inventory space demand careful planning. The game’s plant-based monstrosities and escalating dread give it a distinct identity, while its balance of action, horror, and resource management positions it firmly alongside the modern greats of survival horror.

Set on the cursed island of Tormentosa, Crisol blends survival horror with folklore and divine terror. Players embody Gabriel, a soldier who wields his own blood as both lifeline and ammunition, with every shot draining health, forcing careful trade-offs between survival and power.

As players delve deeper, they uncover ruined cities, cults, and grotesque statues brought to life, with more of the story being revealed through the environment than the actual gameplay. The game leans a bit more into action than horror, making it a closer fit for players who want that RE4 feel as opposed to traditional jumpscares.

It is hard to talk about Resident Evil without mentioning the long-awaited ninth mainline installment: Requiem. Taking characters from the past and adding in a few new ones, the game is poised to continue Capcom's streak of smash hits, blending survival horror gameplay with psychologically taxing environments to create a sense of unease at all times.

Games That Should Have Gone Full Horror

Despite flirting with the genre, many people have wondered how great these games would be if they embraced horror with open arms.

The game will feel incredibly familiar to anyone who has played the RE remakes or any of the newer games, but something that makes this installment particularly interesting is the ability to switch perspectives at the click of a button. This allows the game to be as intimate or action-heavy as the player prefers, giving them more agency than ever to experience the horrors in their own way.

Holstin takes the concept of perspective switching to a whole new level. Players find themselves in an isolated Polish town that has been consumed by an ominous presence, tasked with searching for answers and uncovering the truth behind the infection.

What makes the game intriguing is the ability to swap from an isometric perspective to a third-person one, letting players see more of the map at once but giving them the accuracy they need when taking on gruesome foes. The aesthetic feels very reminiscent of RE4, and the protagonist is even wearing a familiar-looking coat that might have been borrowed from Leon Kennedy himself.

Industria 2 continues Nora’s struggle in a hostile parallel dimension where industrial decay collides with sprawling machine structures. Players need to craft their way out of the hell they find themselves in, managing a diegetic inventory, grounding players in its bleak, immersive world.

As players face the consequences of creating an uncontrollable AI, the game takes a turn into body horror, as the machines bleed oil and move in unsettling and unpredictable ways. The combat and survival mechanics make it feel akin to a RE experience, only in this case, the zombies are replaced with unrelenting mechanical nightmares.

Total Chaos transforms the ruined island of Fort Oasis into a descent through madness, where the silence and shadows conceal horrors both human and inhuman. Once a mining hub, the island now harbours cryptic transmissions, derelict environments, and a truth that corrodes sanity itself.

Players are faced with challenges both mechanically and mentally, having to fight their way through room after room with no end in sight. Each encounter with the grotesque foes demands strategy and composure, echoing the tension of Resident Evil 4 but with a uniquely psychological aspect that makes it feel distinct from many other games in the genre.
