Of course, old-school Resident Evil fans may already know how the ranking systems of the franchise work, but the 2023 remake comes with minor adjustments that might need to be clarified for those unaware. The Separate Ways DLC in RE4 Remake has caused a reshuffling of ranks and introduced exciting rewards in modes like Mercenaries. This update details all the changes and guides players on unlocking new characters through the rank system.
RE4 Remake Ranking System Explained
In the Resident Evil 4 remake, the ranking system is a performance metric. It determines how good the player is by analyzing their playtime and save data. The faster they complete the game, the better rank they get.
The ranking metrics are different for Mercenaries, where the player fights off hordes of enemies. In that mode, the number of kills and combos determine whether the player deserves an A, B, S, S+, or S++ rank.
Rank Requirements for All Difficulties
Except for the S+ rank on the Professional mode, all RE4 ranks are determined by playtime. On the Assisted difficulty, for example, beating the game in under 15 hours gives the player an A rank; beating it in 4 hours on an NG+ gives them an S; and beating it in under 4 hours on a New Game rewards them with an S+ rank.
The following table details all rank requirements in the RE4 remake.

The numbers in the table above highlight the playtime limit for each rank. 15h, for example, means the player must beat the game in under fifteen hours.
Getting an S+ rank in New Game Plus is impossible. To get this rank, the player must create a new save file and start a game with no carried-over items.
Rank Rewards For All Difficulties
There are 21 prizes the player can unlock through ranks. Of these, four are unique utility apparels that boost Leon’s stats (Chicken Hat, Cat Ears, Fox Tails, and Deer Antlers), and two are unique weapons (Handcannon and Chicago Sweeper). The rest are outfits and accessories.

Mercenaries Rank Requirements
With the 1.04 update came a new DLC that added to the RE4 remake’s action: The Mercenaries. This mode lets the player try to survive hordes of enemies and get ranked by the number of kills and combos they get. Unlike the campaign, the playtime has less of an impact on the Mercenaries ranking system and is mainly determined by “enemies killed” and “highest combo” scores.
The following table shows the Mercenaries’ ranking requirements.

With the addition of the Separate Ways DLC, the Mercenaries mode got four new rank rewards. Here's what players will earn by getting A, S, S+, and S++ ranks in this updated survival mode:
- A rank with Leon unlocks Luis.
- A rank with Luis unlocks Krauser.
- A rank with Krauser grants H.U.N.K.
- Completing any map with any rank using Ada unlocks Wesker.
- S rank in all stages with Ada unlocks her Dressed version.
- S rank in all stages with Leon unlocks his Pinstripe version.
The C and S++ ranks do not exist in the RE4 remake’s campaign.
The Resident Evil 4 remake is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
