Summary

  • Resident Evil 4 remake hits 8 million sales, still trails top RE games in sales.
  • Fans rave over the RE4 remake, praising Capcom for the fresh overhaul.
  • Uncertainty surrounds future RE titles, potential Code Veronica remake in the works.

The Resident Evil 4 remake has crossed an impressive threshold of 8 million copies sold. However, while it's nothing to scoff at, the game still has a long way to go to even reach the top five in sales of Resident Evil games.

The Resident Evil 4 remake was a big hit with fans and critics, bringing back when one of Resident Evil's most-loved adventures and giving it a fresh current-gen overhaul. It was a difficult task, for sure, but one that Capcom had already proven it was capable of with the prior remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3.

Now, Capcom is thanking its fans for getting the Resident Evil 4 remake past the threshold of 8 million copies sold. The developer account left a message for fans in Japanese and English, thanking the 8 million plus fans and sharing a piece of art to commemorate the occasion. Fans have showered the developer with praise in the comments, congratulating the company and hoping for more entries to the series. Some fans are already excited at the prospect of a Resident Evil 5 remake, while others are still eager for the series to go back to Claire and Chris' story in a Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is Scratching the Surface

Capcom's latest Resident Evil 4 milestone is impressive, but with a series of heavy-hitting entries, it still hasn't managed to climb as high as its original version. Resident Evil 4' s 2005 version has sold over 13 million copies, though it's had a long time to do so and has accomplished it across a multitude of gaming platforms that it's been ported to over the years. The top three entries to the series right now are Resident Evil 7 with just shy of 14 million copies sold, Resident Evil 2 remake with 14.2 million, while Resident Evil 5 still holds the crown with 14.8 million sales.

Where the franchise goes from here has largely been left a mystery by Capcom. While fans are both expecting a Resident Evil 9 and another remake, no official announcements have been made about either of them. There have been numerous leaks that the developer is working on a Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake, but nothing concrete. While Resident Evil 5 sold extremely well, it also stirred up a lot of controversy, and fans who didn't have a co-op partner to play with were irritated by how their AI partner would behave. Of course, it's been 15 years since then, and such technology has greatly improved. It will be interesting to see what the developer announces next.
