A fan of the Resident Evil franchise has created a custom Resident Evil 6 demake that reimagines the game as a full-fledged PS1-era title. With retro-style visuals being particularly popular as of late, era-appropriate demakes of beloved video games have grown more ubiquitous as well, reworking their look and feel to make them appear as they would had they launched a few decades ago.

Being one of the more poorly received RE games, Resident Evil 6 sits in the awkward middle between Capcom's true classics and its modern re-envisioning of the IP's horror roots. Resident Evil 5 is still a bit more grounded than 6 ended up being, and Resident Evil 7 put its foot down and eased off all the action to focus on horror and survival gameplay. Still, some remember RE6 at least somewhat fondly, it would seem.

Posting on their YouTube channel and Twitter, a user going by the name Rustic Games recently posted a gameplay showcase of their Resident Evil 6 demake project. Though seemingly limited in scope, this new demo is similar to Rustic Games' previous Resident Evil 5 demake, showing off similar mechanics and animations. This, of course, makes perfect sense, as Rustic Games goes out of their way to replicate the classic visual style of the games made for the very first PlayStation console, which means adhering to a strict set of asset and gameplay rules.

Usually sitting near the bottom of most Resident Evil franchise tier lists, Resident Evil 6 is often seen as Capcom jumping the proverbial shark with the IP. Though it doesn't seem like subsequent RE games necessarily ignore the events of RE6 specifically, they don't outright reference them either, and this could be taken to mean that Capcom wanted to distance its newer horror offerings from a game that, broadly speaking, many fans never ended up enjoying.

Still, as Rustic Games' latest efforts clearly show, some fans believe that there are merits to playing Resident Evil 6. Controversial though it may have been, the game's core combat loop offered an impressive array of options to the player, being more dynamic and cinematic than almost any other game in the series. These features simply weren't what fans loved the most about Resident Evil games, of course, which showed a disconnect from old Capcom and its player base at the time.

Rustic Games' game demakes don't usually end up being turned into full, playable experiences. Instead, they're mainly supposed to be limited-scope showcases that present viewers with "what-if" scenarios. Those looking for a subtle Resident Evil kick that still stands on its own two feet may instead wish to check out the cheeky puzzle game Save Room, which is inspired by RE4's inventory management system.

Resident Evil 6 is currently available for PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
