Though the first playthrough of a Resident Evil game can always be a terrifying but very worthwhile experience, it's never a bad idea to replay through the story, especially since so many of the games provide extra content for players to unlock. This often comes in the form of unique cosmetics or weapons, but specific character buffs can also be acquired, like unlimited ammunition for certain guns or the option to make the protagonist faster on their feet.
5 Resident Evil Games With The Best Endings, Ranked
Resident Evil players will be satisfied with the endings to these games in the series, which will leave smiles on their faces upon seeing the credits.
Some unlockables can easily be acquired by running through the story or completing a few Mercenaries missions, but throughout the series' history, there have been many bits of extra content that have become infamous for how challenging they are to actually unlock.
7 Infinite Ammo (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
How To Unlock: Beat The Game On Madhouse Difficulty
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
- Released
- January 24, 2017
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Platform(s)
- PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror, Psychological Horror, First-Person
Madhouse Difficulty in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard will provide a true test of skill for anyone who considers themselves a survival horror expert. Not only does the mode severely limit the player's saving options, but it also makes items and ammo much more scarce, beefs up the enemies, and mixes around the locations of the Antique Coins. It's certainly not a mode for the faint of heart since a single slash from the Molded or a punch from Jack is all that is needed to put Ethan in the red or simply to kill him outright.
In all honesty, though, this is still an incredibly satisfying challenge to overcome, especially since Ethan will be able to turn the tables on his captors after acquiring infinite ammunition for the next playthrough. It's heavily advised that players brave enough to take on Madhouse finish the game a handful of times on lower difficulties first, just to get a good idea of how the environments are laid out, and more importantly, how to deal with boss fights.
6 Cat Ears (Resident Evil 4 Remake)
How To Unlock: Complete The Main Story On Professional With An S+ Rank
Resident Evil 4
- Released
- March 24, 2023
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Platform(s)
- PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror
There's quite an extensive catalog of special items that players can earn in the Resident Evil 4 remake, though out of them all, the Cat Ears are undoubtedly the best of the bunch. Sure, they might seem like little more than a silly cosmetic at first, but when Leon has these perched atop his head, it will grant every single one of his weapons (except the rocket launcher) infinite ammunition.
6 Resident Evil Games With The Best Music
The Resident Evil series is well-known for its haunting soundtracks, but these entries represent the very best of the franchise's OSTs.
However, completing the game on Professional is already a hard enough task, but in order to achieve an S+ rank, players must reach the end in under 5 and a half hours while also using no more than 15 typewriter saves along the way. This challenge cannot be competed on New Game + mode either, which makes it even more arduous, but being able to unlock infinite ammunition for every weapon all in one go, rather than one by one, is still a generous reward that can really help out with achievement hunting.
5 LZ Answerer (Resident Evil Village)
How To Unlock: Beat Every Mercenaries Stage With An SS Rank
Resident Evil Village
- Released
- May 7, 2021
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Platform(s)
- PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR2, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS
Anyone who has ever played a Resident Evil game will know it can get rather wacky from time to time, but nobody could have expected that a literal lightsaber from Star Wars would eventually make its way into the series. While it's not officially labeled as being a lightsaber, the design of the device, paired with its dual-blade mode, makes it more or less identical to the weapon of choice wielded by the Jedi and Sith Lords, though actually getting it is far from a walk in the park.
Because Capcom attempted to slow down the gunplay of Resident Evil Village, it means the Mercenaries mode is extremely hard and very unpredictable. It also doesn't help that the Lycans can be pretty smart enemies who will constantly be shuffling around to avoid the players' shots, meaning that defeating one can be hard enough. To get the precious SS rank, players will need to be on their A-game from start to finish and avoid making any slip-ups.
4 Katana (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)
How To Unlock: Clear Every Episode On Invisible Mode
Resident Evil: Revelations 2
Just as the name implies, Invisible Mode in Resident Evil: Revelations 2 makes it so the enemies in each of the four chapters will be completely invisible to the naked eye. The only way to get an idea of where a monster could be is by using Natalia's pointing ability, which will give a brief indication as to where they are, but other than this, players will need to use their environmental awareness and knowledge of the levels to protect themselves from taking any damage.
It goes without saying, but players will need to run through the game a few times before attempting Invisible Mode since it almost entirely relies on them knowing where the enemies spawn and what weapons will prove to be most effective for taking them on. Thankfully, the Katana, which Moira can unlock, is a ton of fun to use, and it's also a reference to another one of Capcom's games, Onimusha, where Samanosuke Akechi can be seen wielding a blade with a strikingly similar design.
3 Infinite Rocket Launcher (Resident Evil 2)
How To Unlock: Finish Leon Or Claire's First Scenario In Less Than 2:30 Hours With An A Or B Rank
Resident Evil 2
- Released
- January 21, 1998
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Platform(s)
- Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, PC, PS1
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror
Players will need to harness their inner speedrunner to stand any chance of acquiring the deadly Infinite Rocket Launcher in the original Resident Evil 2. Knowing the right answers to each puzzle and being aware of exactly where every enemy is going to spawn becomes crucial for making it through each of the game's areas in one piece.
13 Hardest Resident Evil Games, Ranked
Throughout the entire Resident Evil franchise, there exist some games in the series that are far harder than others for a multitude of reasons.
The reason it's so important to avoid being attacked during this challenge is that players will need to limit how much they heal in order to gain a high enough score to meet the B or A rank requirement. Since the original Resident Evil 2 includes plenty of small and narrow areas packed full of enemies, it also means avoiding damage while sprinting through the entire game can take a lot of time and practice. With that being said, though, in classic Resident Evil fashion, the Infinite Rocket Launcher will instantly decimate anything it makes contact with, which makes it a very worthwhile reward for anyone skilled enough to earn it.
2 Handcannon (Resident Evil 4)
How To Unlock: Obtain 5 Stars On Every Mercenaries Stage With All Characters
Resident Evil 4
The Mercenaries is an extra game mode that initially made its debut in the original Resident Evil 3, and though the mode is all about racking up a high score by earning kills, surviving is no cakewalk. Although there are only 4 Mercenaries stages in Resident Evil 4, all of them, aside from the Village, are fairly big in scale and feature a whole host of dangerous enemies who can make getting those 5 stars an absolute nightmare.
In order to actually get this rank, players are required to keep a consistent combo going from beginning to end, which requires a lot of strategy and patience. As mentioned previously, though, this is much harder than it sounds, especially when the maps start throwing multiple blind Garradors and giant chainsaw-wielding Salvadors the player's way. Considering the Handcannon is capable of taking most Ganados out with a single shot, though, the reward is very much worth it in the end.
1 Minigun/ATM-4 (Resident Evil 2 Remake)
How To Unlock: Beat One Of Claire's/Leon's Scenarios On Hardcore With An S+ Rank
Resident Evil 2
- Released
- January 25, 2019
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Platform(s)
- PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S
- Genre(s)
- Horror
Ranks in the Resident Evil 2 remake aren't based on accuracy, enemies killed, or even damage taken. Instead, they are entirely based around the amount of time players take to run through a scenario, and in order to get the S+ rank, this needs to be done in under 2 and a half hours for the first scenario and under 2 hours for the second. That's not all, though, as an S+ can also only be acquired by saving no more than three times, which is a brutal restriction considering how easy it can be to make a mistake and not be able to go back to rectify it.
Ignoring zombies to save as much ammo as possible for the bosses is an absolute must, especially because they will be far more durable when playing on Hardcore mode. However, players will also need to unlock all the RPD's secret equipment, such as the pistol attachments and bonus resources, as quickly as possible before they progress with the rest of the game. Both the Minigun and ATM-4 are devastating weapons that will turn either Claire or Leon into an unstoppable force of destruction, but it's also worth giving this challenge a go because of how intense and immersive it makes the overall gameplay experience.
