While some characters in the Resident Evil series may have had the chance to go out in a blaze of glory, not everyone has been given that luxury. In fact, there have been several villains and even heroes who have been taken down in some pretty humiliating ways, despite everything they achieved in the story up until that point.
Resident Evil: 8 Best Underdogs In The Series
Despite having the odds stacked against them, these Resident Evil characters faced the horrors that awaited them head-on.
On the one hand, giving a major antagonist of a game an embarrassing death can act as a kind of comical reward for the player, allowing them to rub the villain's nose in the fact they just scored a victory over them. However, when it comes to the most humiliating of them all, these are among the deaths in the Resident Evil series that did a good job, whether intentional or not, of embarrassing a certain character in their final moments.
This list will contain major spoilers for several of the mainline Resident Evil games.
8 Ricardo Irving
Irving Desperately Tries To Prove Himself To His Superiors By Mutating Into An Aquatic Monster
Resident Evil 5
- Released
- March 5, 2009
- ESRB
- M for Mature: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror
- Cause Of Death: Killed By Chris And Sheva After Mutation
Despite being a central antagonist for the first half of Resident Evil 5, Irving doesn't initially seem all that threatening. The truth is, Irving is a black market dealer who is constantly being mocked and belittled by Excella, leading him to acquire a sort of inferiority complex in relation to his higher ups.
When he's finally confronted by Chris and Sheva, he decides to inject himself, becoming a large kraken-like B.O.W. Who is taken out by a barrage of gatling guns only moments later. In his humiliating dying moments, Irving would continue to try and insult the protagonists, all while he lay there bleeding to death out on a ship in the middle of nowhere.
7 Chief Irons
Irons Acts Like A Child And Decides To Push The Blame Onto Claire After Being Infected By Birkin
Resident Evil 2
- Released
- January 25, 2019
- ESRB
- M for Mature: Blood and Gore, Strong Language, Intense Violence
- Genre(s)
- Horror
- Cause Of Death: Killed By G-Embryo
The first time Chief Irons shows up to confront Claire at the beginning of Resident Evil 2 Remake, he introduces himself by insulting her before then kidnapping Sherry and running off to an undisclosed location. Needless to say, he doesn't exactly make a great first impression, but when Claire finally catches up to him in the orphanage, he turns out to be in pretty bad shape.
6 Resident Evil Games With Barely Any Puzzles
Those looking for a fun Resident Evil game that doesn't force them to solve too many puzzles need to try out these streamlined entries.
As he attempts to shift the blame over to Claire in some desperate final attempt to justify his wrongdoings, a creature who was implanted inside of him by William Birkin bursts out of his chest, leaving him for dead. Irons is the last character in this series who would have deserved an honorable death, so it makes sense why Capcom decided to embarrass him in this way, with his final moments simply being used as a showcase of Birkin's powers.
6 Ustanak
One Mighty Haymaker From Jake, And Ustanak Was Down For The Count
Resident Evil 6
- Released
- October 2, 2012
- ESRB
- M for Mature: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes
- Genre(s)
- Third-Person Shooter
- Cause Of Death: Beaten By Jake And Dropped Into A Lava Pool
For the entirety of Jake and Sherry's campaign in Resident Evil 6, the duo are chased by a menacing and highly dangerous B.O.W. Known as Ustanak. This massive beast simply doesn't know when to quit and is willing to chase Jake and Sherry to the ends of the Earth if it means killing them for good.
After cornering them in a volcanic chamber, Jake finds himself one-on-one with the monster and, after a pretty brutal slugfest, manages to knock him over the edge with one final haymaker, causing him to fall into the lava. While the Ustanak was certainly no pushover considering how relentlessly it pursued the duo in their respective stories, seeing such a behemoth be pummeled with a barrage of punches and eventually thrown into the lava pit is immensely satisfying.
5 Derek Simmons
Simmons' Death Ironically References The Umbrella Corporation
- Takes Place In: Resident Evil 6
- Cause Of Death: Impaled By A Giant Obelisk
Derek Simmons starts off Resident Evil 6 as simply a National Security Advisor for the U.S. Government, but it is soon revealed that he is secretly the leader of a dangerous group known only as "The Family." Though he wasn't inherently related to Umbrella, his final moments, which see him getting impaled after falling off a helipad, show a huge Umbrella symbol with his blood filling in the red parts of the logo.
Some fans felt at the time this was Capcom teasing Umbrella's involvement in future games, but it could also just serve as an eerie reminder of whom the real masterminds in the series are and how they can never be replaced by individuals as weak-minded as Simmons. Either way, it's a pretty embarrassing way to go out for the main villain of Resident Evil 6.
4 Oswald E. Spencer
While Preaching About Being A God, Spencer Is Taken Out By His Own Creation
- Takes Place In: Resident Evil 5
- Cause Of Death: Stabbed Through The Chest By Wesker
As the head of the Wesker project and owner of the mansion seen in the first game, Spencer is an incredibly important character in the series, despite not actually appearing in-person until the fifth mainline title. When he does finally show up, it's in a flashback where he starts talking about how he was promised to become a god, but in the middle of his grand speech, he is stabbed through the chest by none other than Albert Wesker.
Best Resident Evil Protagonists With The Most Games
Characters like Chris Redfield and Ada Wong have been playable protagonists in a large number of Resident Evil games.
Considering everything Spencer has done within the series, seeing him be taken down by his own test subject is one of the most humiliating ways his life could have ended. Despite his relevance in the story, Spencer certainly doesn't receive a very pleasant farewell from Wesker.
3 Excella Gione
Once Wesker No Longer Saw A Need To Keep Excella Around, He Used Her As A Demonstration Of Uroboros' Power
- Takes Place In: Resident Evil 5
- Cause Of Death: Injected With Uroboros By Wesker And Killed In Mutation By Chris And Sheva
Though Wesker plays the role of big bad in Resident Evil 5, Excella is always there by his side to help him with any dirty work that he needs to get done before eventually spreading Uroboros across the entire world. It's heavily implied that Excella actually wants to start some kind of relationship with Wesker, which is why it comes as a shock to her when he decides to use her as an Uroboros test subject after she does all he can to help him achieve his goal.
Wesker even goes through the trouble of ensuring that Excella would mutate at the head of his ship, so that Chris and Sheva would witness her public humiliation for themselves. Once Excella transformed and began infesting the entire ship, she was blasted to smithereens with a pair of laser rockets, putting an end to the madness once and for all.
2 Luis Serra
It Was As Though Saddler Was Waiting For The Perfect Moment To Bring Luis Back Down To Size
Resident Evil 4
- Released
- January 11, 2005
- ESRB
- M for Mature: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Language
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror
- Cause Of Death: Stabbed Through The Chest By Saddler
Luis is a character who initially doesn't get along all that well with Leon, but the two eventually warm up to one another, especially when Luis offers to give him and Ashley some medicine to slow down their infection. In the original game, after Leon and Ashley enter the castle, Luis heads back to the village to pick up the pills and a sample after dropping them, but when he finally makes his way back, he's given a pretty rude welcoming.
Just as Luis steps through a door and announces to Leon that he's got what he needs, a giant tentacle suddenly stabs him through the back before slamming him down to the ground, which would turn out to be Saddler. Though Luis' efforts certainly weren't in vain, considering that the medicine kept Leon and Ashley healthy for a while longer, it was humiliating to see all of his efforts result in such a quick and gory death.
1 Albert Wesker
Not Even Wesker Can Stand Up Against The Deadliest Weapon In The Series
- Takes Place In: Resident Evil 5
- Cause Of Death: Beheaded By Two Rockets From Chris And Sheva
Albert Wesker, the overarching villain for much of the series, puts up one heck of a fight at the end of Resident Evil 5 against Chris and Sheva. After fusing with Uroboros, which he had planned to spread across the entire world until his plans were thwarted, Wesker pushes both Chris and Sheva to their absolute limit, before, finally, they are able to kick him into a pool of lava.
Just as the two are flying off in a helicopter, though, Wesker pops back up, entirely defenseless, squirming around in the lava while shouting out Chris' name. In the end, he receives an unceremoniously quick death after his head is taken off by two rockets while the two protagonists proceed to badmouth him. It turns out that not even the all-powerful Wesker can survive the sheer might of the legendary Rocket Launcher.
