Summary

  • Jill Valentine, a staple character, deserves a return to the franchise.
  • Ada Wong needs her own mainline game after appearing mostly as a side character.
  • Sheva Alomar has proven herself as a valuable asset and deserves more from the franchise.

Resident Evil has established itself as one of the greatest survival horror franchises of all time, thrilling its players with its zombie-infested cities and mutated monstrosities. So far, there is quite a healthy roster of playable characters in the universe, with a few definitely being Capcom's favorite children.

Resident Evil Chris Redfield
Resident Evil Protagonist Tier List

The Resident Evil franchise has featured several protagonists since its inception, and there's a way to rank them on impact and combat proficiency.

These legacy characters have appeared across numerous titles, taking on a new age of BOWs and the terrorist organizations that are using them to further their own selfish goals. Capcom has introduced a new character with almost every game, though not all of them have made their heralded hall of fame. These characters could be just as deserving if they were given the chance.

Jill is undoubtedly one of the most popular Resident Evil characters, having debuted in the first game alongside Chris Redfield and then given her own story in Resident Evil 3. She has appeared multiple times throughout the franchise, returning as a playable protagonist in Revelations and a mind-controlled antagonist in Resident Evil 5. More games have since been released in the franchise, leaving one burning question for fans: Where is Jill now?

As one of the main faces of the franchise, it is surprising that Jill hasn't made a return to the series for years now, the Winter's saga leaving her in the dust without even a mention of her name. Future sequels might change that, but for now, Jill remains a character fans should definitely see more of.

Ada Wong has a tendency to steal the spotlight whenever she's on-screen, but she has only ever shared games with other characters. She was a supporting character in Resident Evil 2, had a spin-off scenario in Resident Evil 4, and even had a playable segment in Resident Evil 6. There were also rumors that her inclusion was proposed for Resident Evil Village, but the concept was ultimately scrapped, leaving an Ada-shaped hole in the franchise as of late.

Ada Wong is one of the Resident Evil franchise's most recognizable characters. These are some of her best iterations.

With her yet to have her own mainline entry in the series and her last outing being in the remake of Resident Evil 4, Ada is definitely owed more by Capcom. Her too-cool-for-school character and her status as a certified badass definitely means she deserves more than being a side to the main event. It is time that she gets the spotlight.

Resident Evil 6 has proven the most divisive entry in the series, following the previous games' descent into more action-oriented gameplay and all but foregoing the survival horror that made the franchise so great. The game was split into scenarios that involved a different duo each time, with the first involving series celebrity Leon S. Kennedy and a newcomer, Helena Harper, who were both caught in the midst of a zombie outbreak.

Helena turned out to be one of the saving graces of the game, as she was a truly nuanced character who had depth and flaws, making her both realistic and relatable. Resident Evil has always introduced well-written characters, and Helena is one who truly deserves more than the title she was given. Given the infamy of the 6th entry, its doubtful that Capcom will ever revisit anything to do with the game, but fans can always hope.

The main aim of Resident Evil 4 was to rescue the President's daughter, Ashley Graham, from her kidnappers in a remote Spanish village. Leon ventured to find the villagers have undergone transformation from the Las Plagas parasite, turning them into hostile, zombie-like creatures. And there is more than the ganados Leon must protect Ashley from, as the location is full of monsters that defy logic.

Ashley was a point of contention for fans of the original. Some found her voice, personality, and lack of self-defense to be a detriment to her character and the game as a whole. In the remake, Ashley still has little means to defend herself, but her character was overhauled for the better, so much so that most would rejoice to see her return to the series. Her time as a prisoner could be the motivation she needs to learn self-defense, and her admiration for Leon could see her training to become an agent herself.

3 Sherry Birkin

Resident Evil 6 Reveals That Sherry Has Grown Capable

  • Resident Evil 6

From her tenure in Claire's scenario in Resident Evil 2, Sherry set herself out as a young and sweet girl who deserved more than the callousness of her mother who turned her back on her in her time of need, leaving her safety up to Claire, a mere stranger to them at the time. She demonstrated resourcefulness when escaping Chief Irons and the orphanage, going on to be a grown woman who could hold her own in Resident Evil 6.

Many Resident Evil characters have grown as the series has progressed, but some have changed a great deal more than others.

Thus far, Sherry and her story have yet to return to the franchise, which would be an excellent opportunity to further develop her now that she has stepped out of Claire's shadow. Giving her more independence and story could further build on her budding character and could have her join the ranks of the excellent along with the always popular legacy characters.

Introduced in Resident Evil 0, criminal convict Billy Coen has yet to return to the series, just one more name etched into the annals of its history. He was forced to work alongside Rebecca Chambers when the train they are both on came under the attack of leech-like creatures, zombies, and more. Their alliance is a tenuous one, but watching the pair learn to depend on one another and learning more about the mysterious Billy are true highlights of this game.

He represents a completely different character than the normal Resident Evil protagonists given his blase nature to events, the irreverence he displays to Rebecca, and his status as a criminal, which, while a departure from the usual characters, served the game he starred in. Billy starring in a new game could offer a breath of newness into the series, which there is room for now that the Winters' saga is over.

Most fans will think of Jill Valentine as Chris' partner, and they would be right, but Jill is not the only partner who has joined him on missions. During his investigation in Africa, BSAA agent Sheva Alomar joined in and proved to be a great asset. While no one could truly replace Jill, Sheva proved herself as a worthwhile partner, not only to Chris but to the fans of the franchise. Together, they freed Jill from mind-control, killed Wesker, and halted his plans.

These accolades alone are enough proof that Sheva deserves more than one entry in the series, which was a divisive one at that. While it is unlikely that Resident Evil will ever return to that part of the world, there is nothing stopping Sheva from joining the fight wherever the games go next.
