Koshi Nakanishi has confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem will include a third-person mode because the previous game he directed was too scary for many players. Before returning for Resident Evil Requiem, the last game he directed was RE7, widely regarded as one of the scariest entries in the series.

Since Resident Evil Requiem was first announced, fans have been eager to know how scary the game will be. Much of this anticipation comes from Nakanishi returning as director because fans are already familiar with his taste for extreme horror. Now, the legendary game director's comment on one gameplay feature seems to hint at the answer.

Resident Evil Requiem lets players switch between first and third-person, but one clearly packs a bigger punch over the other.

Resident Evil Requiem Has a Third-Person Mode to Make It Less Scary

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Koshi Nakanishi admitted that his previous game, Resident Evil 7, was perhaps too scary, which is why he and his team decided to add a third-person mode to the upcoming installment. Resident Evil Requiem's third-person perspective is meant to balance its horror elements, making it more accessible for players who struggle with the intense first-person moments. This could be good news for hardcore fans, as Nakanishi's comment suggests that the game might be just as scary as the seventh installment, at least in first-person mode.

One way the third-person mode will ease the scary moments is by slowing down the stalker enemies. In an interview with Game Informer, Nakanishi explained that there will be instances in third-person when the protagonist trips, falls, or reacts to enemy taunts, which may slow her down. During these moments, the stalking enemy will secretly stop, giving the player a brief window to recover and feel safe.

In the same interview with Game Informer, Koshi Nakanishi also discussed the intensity of fear in his upcoming game. The Japanese director said that Resident Evil 9 is not intended to be the scariest entry in the franchise. "I'm not aiming to make this the scariest Resident Evil ever," he explained. However, he confirmed that the game will still be very scary. Supporting this, the game's producer, Masato Kumazawa, added that Capcom aims to deliver a narrative-driven experience that mixes intense fear with mysteries, puzzle-solving, and even some action.

Fans eager to play Resident Evil Requiem should mark February 27, 2026, on their calendars to prepare for its global release date. There's also a chance for Japanese fans to try a preview of the game at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in September, which promises to be a major event for Capcom.
