SNES throwback indie game Reverie has been announced for PS5. It was first released for PS4 and PS Vita in 2018 and got an enhanced edition on Nintendo Switch the following year. This edition will soon be available for PS5 owners.

Reverie is from New Zealand developer Rainbite and is a loving homage to classic SNES games of the 1990s. Its story is borrowed from a Maori legend and has the player controlling the character Tai who must work to save Tomori Island from spiritual forces during a summer vacation. Its graphical style shares a strong similarity to the RPG Earthbound, but its 2D action gameplay is more akin to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

While it did not set the gaming world on fire, its retro aesthetic struck a chord with fans of the 16-bit era. It later got an enhanced port known as Reverie: Sweet As Edition which was released for the Nintendo Switch in February 2019, adding to the strong catalog of indies on Switch. This version of the game was exclusive to Switch, but publisher EastAsiaSoft announced in a recent showcase that it will be coming to PC, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in early 2023.

Ports of indie games have experienced considerable success on Switch, especially early in the system's life when it was the premiere portable gaming console. As such, many indie studios have made the decision to bring their games to Switch at launch, a famous example being the 2018 indie hit Celeste from developer Extremely OK Games. With EarthBound and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past both being available on Nintendo Switch Online, Reverie: Sweet As Edition fits right in on the console. However, by coming to current-gen consoles and PC, the game will soon be available to many more players.

Previous-gen games that are ported to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S typically get some kind of graphical or performance upgrade, even for indie games. Gris was released for the PS5 in December 2022 and had support for 4K resolution at 120 frames per second, giving people who already played the game a potential reason to revisit it with better hardware. Reverie: Sweet As Edition should be especially exciting for fans that played the game on PS4 as this will be the first time they will be able to play this version's additional content. Fans will hopefully not have to wait long to experience this game on their newest consoles.

Reverie is available on PS4. Reverie: Sweet As Edition is available now on Switch and will release for PC, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2023.
