Fans can watch Rick and Morty season 8, episode 7, "Ricker Than Fiction" on Sunday, July 6th, 2025 at 11 p.m. E.T. On Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network.

The official description reads:

"Rick and Morty write the next installment of their favorite movie franchise."

The title is a reference to Stranger Than Fiction, the 2006 movie starring Will Ferrell as a man who learns he's actually a character in a novel and an author is deciding his every move. Since Rick and Morty leans into silly yet smart humor at every turn, they could write a script that comes to life somehow, and it would fit right into the tone of the series. Maybe Rick comes up with a new invention and adds it into the script, and then decides to create a real version.

Fans discussed the upcoming episode on Reddit and tried to imagine what it could be about. Some fans wondered if one of Rick's most memorable inventions could be included in the new episode. One Redditor wrote, "'Ricker than fiction' looks like a Interdimensional Cable episode." Redditor @ImNew2This2 replied:

"That’s what I was thinking! I’d be shocked and excited to see an interdimensional cable episode after so many years!"

It would definitely make sense if Rick's interdimensional cable box appeared again in season 8, episode 7. In season 1, episode 6, "Rixty Minutes," Rick comes up with a cable box that allows the characters to see TV shows from various dimensions. It appears again in season 2, episode 8, "Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate." Rick comes up with the idea when the family is watching a popular reality series that is similar to The Bachelor. Since his frustration with pop culture is so entertaining and hilarious to watch, it would be great to see him using this cable box again. Maybe Rick and Morty get inspired by a film franchise from another dimension and write a new story.

Rick And Morty Has Done A Great Job With Movie References In Previous Seasons

Rick and Morty has referenced movies in the past, and it's always fun to see what popular culture the show is poking fun at. According to Time Magazine, some of season 1's settings and episode titles were inspired by movies. Season 1, episode 4 is called "Anatomy Park" as a nod to the popular Jurassic Park franchise, and "M. Night Shaym-Aliens!" Is a nod to horror filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. Other episode titles reference popular franchises, including season 3, episode 2 which is called "Rickmancing The Stone" and season 6, episode 5 which is called "Final DeSmithation."

As Time noted, Morty is inspired by the Back to the Future character Marty McFly, and his grandfather Rick is inspired by Dr. Emmett Brown. While Marty (Michael J. Fox) famously time travels back to 1955 from 1985 in the iconic movie, Rick and Morty creator Dan Harmon said that his characters wouldn't. However, that changed in season 4. According to Inverse, Harmon said at the 2019 San Diego Comic Con, "We never messed with time travel after the pilot, but we do in Season 4.” Rick and Morty season 4, episode 5 "Rattlestar Ricklactica" features time travel but also jokes about it, which makes it a lot more entertaining. After Morty kills a snake in space without meaning to, some chaotic events happen, and the animated sitcom laughs at how silly time travel tropes can be. Fans can definitely expect more movie references in the rest of season 8 and the upcoming seasons.
