  • Shepperton Studios commences filming as fans anticipate the return of Rings of Power, exploring the War of the Elves and the Dark Lord.

Amazon Prime's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's second season took fans on a whirlwind journey of emotions as fans saw the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron while he cunningly crafted more Rings, causing unbearable chaos in his wake. As Lord of the Rings enthusiasts wait to hear more about when they will see the third season, pre-production is finally underway, and filming has begun at Shepperton Studios. Now, the cast has opened up about what viewers can expect in Sauron and Gandalf narratives, which seems to include some 'tears'.

Even though The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two received lower ratings compared to its first season, with only around half of the U.S. Population tuning into the show this time around, fans still enjoyed the show's deeper dive into Tolkien's lore-heavy world histories. However, another fantasy series seems to have resonated more with followers as Rafe Judkins' The Wheel of Time overtook Rings of Power with an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score, while the story of Middle-earth struggled at 38-56%, so season 3 has a lot to prove this time around if it wants to prove it still has what it takes to keep viewers glued to their seats.

Rings of Power Actors Tease What’s in Store for Gandalf and Sauron

Gandalf rings of power

Talking in an interview with Deadline, Daniel Weyman, who plays Gandalf, and Charlie Vickers, who plays Sauron, discuss how season 3 of Rings of Power will be a crucial journey for the characters. Weyman hinted that the narrative for the upcoming season will include quite a few “tears”. However, the actor stated that he was excited about this aspect as it would show "failings that young Gandalf can learn from", and so from this, Gandalf will become the legend fans know him as, due to his forthcoming mistakes, these errors will allow him to become an ultimate wizard. "Literally anything could happen, because the only way we’re going to see a wise being later on is if he does some pretty horrendous accidental things, and puts his foot in the wrong places, and has to pick it up and learn again. So I’m hoping for lots of that kind of action just so that we can see him develop and learn how he gets to be the wizard that we all love," said Weyman.

Jumping into the exciting conversation, Charlie Vickers teased that things might not be going too well for Sauron as he would be faced with more challenges as well as dealing with his knockback from Galadiel at the end of Rings of Power season 3, but that fans of the show will be pleased with where his narrative goes. “I’m incredibly lucky that Sauron in this time period is very specific to what he does. We get to go through so many exciting beats that I think fans will be really excited to see. I mean, he has made nearly all the rings now, but there’s one more that he [needs] to finish the collection, which he’s determined and has had in his mind for centuries. So, I’m super excited to see him go on the journey and hopefully take over Middle-earth… I’m sure everything will be great for everyone else.”

The Rings of Power season 3 will kickstart its return by jumping forward several years from the events of Season 2, and takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and the Dark Lord. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay recently hinted at the possibility of flashbacks being a part of season three, since fans loved them so much in the first season. McKay said that they were toying with the idea that each series could start out with a fresh look at a Rings of Power character, in a bid to tell their origin story.

Season 3 of Rings of Power currently doesn't have a release date as yet, but fans can catch up on seasons one and two, which are currently streaming on Prime.
