Chef returns as a playable survivor in Risk of Rain 2's Seekers of the Storm DLC, and he's more or less the same as he was in the first game. This culinary robot is an excellent close-quarters fighter, and he's got a few tricks up his sleeve that lets him steam roll through even the toughest of enemies in the game.

As with all the other ROR 2 characters, Chef needs a lot of items before he can start slaying gods and giant monsters. If you're not quite sure what the best Chef items are, here's a guide to help you sort things out.

Due to the random nature of Risk of Rain 2, full builds are usually achievable only by using the Artifact of Command. During regular runs, players are advised to look for 3D printers or closets with guaranteed item spawns.

Chef is a close-mid-ranged unit sort of like the False Son in ROR 2, except he relies heavily on using all his abilities in quick succession. Because of this, players should try to find a balance between increasing Chef's DPS and survivability, especially once the difficulty starts to ramp up. You don't necessarily need to get all the items on the following list, but do use this as a guide to find out what would work best for you.

Chef's playstyle lends itself well to some otherwise unorthodox item picks that many of the other playable survivors usually don't get much value out of. This is especially true in the early game, where Chef can struggle to find his footing. As much as possible, try to get these items first.

Death Mark

Chef can trigger Death Mark with debuffs from Sear and Glaze, reducing the number of items required.

Use Roll, activate Sear, then run circles around your enemies.

Bandolier

Bandolier can reset Chef's abilities, reducing the overall downtime of your DPS.

Hopoo Feather

Mandatory item for characters with low vertical mobility.

Symbiotic Scorpion

Shreds armor and helps trigger Death Mark for even more damage.

Luxury Items

The best red items in ROR 2 are often counted as Luxury Items — they aren't mandatory, but they definitely help make many builds much stronger. Some good legendary items for Chef include:

  • Laser Scope: Increases critical damage by 100%. Use this if you have Lens-maker's Glasses or Ocular HUD.
  • Alien Head: Reduces ability cooldown times by 25%. Great when paired with Backup Mag or Lysate Cell.
  • Hardlight Afterburner: Grants two extra mobility skill charges. Great with Alien Head.
  • Sonorous Whispers: Large monsters always drop items. Elites have a 15% chance to drop items. Get this when looping.
  • Ceremonial Dagger: Spawns three homing daggers that seek enemies. Excellent add-clear item.
