Operator is one of the two survivors from Risk of Rain 2: Alloyed Collective, and unlike the loot-hoarding, bag-smacking Drifter, this one plays more like a conventional ranged character. What sets Operator apart from the others is his aptitude with drones; he is the only playable Risk of Rain 2 character who unlocks the full potential of these mechanical companions, making him the best choice for players who want to lean heavily towards drone builds. The following is an Operator build that takes full advantage of his drone-related skill set.

Best Operator Skills in Risk of Rain 2

RoR 2 Operator kit description
Risk of Rain 2 Operator kit description

Before diving into the meat and potatoes of Operator's best items, we need to cover his abilities first. His default kit includes:

  • Drone Tech (Passive): Operator starts with 2 custom drones.
  • H3-11 OCR Custom (Primary Skill): Fire a blast of energy that deals 150-600% damage and ricochets on kill. Shots are stronger based on charges consumed, and charges are replenished over time while not firing.
  • ADMIN-OVERRIDE (Secondary Skill): Order a drone to unleash a special skill. A charge is stored for every drone you own.
  • Ascent Protocol (Utility Skill): Command a drone to lift you into the air and start a controlled fall. Can be reactivated to leap to another drone.
  • Ejection Core (Special Skill): Launch a drone that knocks enemies up into the air, damaging for 300% and inflicting them with Nano-Bugged, which amplifies the damage they take from Operator's skills.

Operator's abilities are more straightforward compared to Drifter's, and we recommend sticking with Operator's default skills since they offer the most balanced distribution between power and mobility. Ascent Protocol is especially important, as Operator will have no movement skills otherwise. This class plays a bit like the Commando for reasons we'll go over later.

What we do recommend changing is his starting drones. By default, you start with a Gunner and Healing Drone (with an unlockable Transport Drone via a challenge). Instead of taking one of each drone, take two Gunner drones to maximize your early firepower. The more bullets you can send down range, the faster you'll be able to get money and scale with the game's ever-increasing difficulty.

The Death Mark Combo

Death Mark in Risk of Rain 2's logbook
Risk of Rain 2 Death Mark logbook

Death Mark is an uncommon item that amplifies your damage against targets affected by 4 or more debuffs. This item works well for every other character in Risk of Rain 2, but it's especially good for survivors who have built-in debuffing skills like Operator. The Nano-Bugged effect from Ejection Core counts as a debuff, which means you only need to find 3 more debuff sources to make use of Death Mark.

The usual debuff items for Death Mark builds include:

  • Tri-Tip Dagger (Bleed)
  • Chronobauble (Slow)
  • Runald's Band (Slow)
  • Gasoline (Ignite)
  • Symbiotic Scorpion (Permanent Armor Reduction)
  • Shattering Justice (Pulverized)

Playstyle

RoR 2 operator vs solus amalgamator
Risk of Rain 2 operator vs solus amalgamator

As mentioned earlier, Operator is a little similar to Commando in terms of playstyle. For the most part, all you need to do is spam your damaging abilities while Ascent Protocol keeps you airborne. By equipping two Gunner drones, you get a slightly weaker version of Commando's Suppressive Fire skill. Operator won't be able to stun enemies using his Gunner drones, but he can continuously pump out damage with them, as long as he has enough Gunner Drones to support him.

With that being said, we recommend buying as many Gunner Drones as you can during a run. This does two things:

  • ADMIN-OVERRIDE becomes more reliable as a DPS skill.
  • You'll be able to trigger on-hit effects more rapidly.

Of course, the good thing about a drone build is that you have a swarm of drones covering you at all times. A single Gunner Drone might not do much, but 10 of them can do a lot of damage, especially when buffed by Spare Drone Parts.

Gunner Drones will unleash a quick burst of bullets when you use ADMIN-OVERRIDE, and each hit has a chance to trigger on-hit effects from your items. You get one skill charge for every drone you have, and at the very start of the round, you'll get two charges courtesy of your passive ability. In summary, buy drones, spam your second skill, and watch as numbers and pretty lights flood your screen.
