The Seekers of the Storm DLC has just launched for Risk of Rain 2 at the time of writing this, and fans are diving into it headfirst to see all the new items, stages, survivors, and more to be found. And, unlike a lot of other games these days, a lot of the new stuff is left up to the players themselves to discover, rather than be explained or immediately given to them in-game.

Both roguelikes and roguelites have the potential to offer compelling atmospheres that stick with players long after completion.

There are a lot of new systems, mechanics, and quality-of-life changes in this DLC, for example. One new mechanic that people have been already very curious about are the Soul Shrines that can appear on any stage. So with that in mind, let's take a deeper look at how these Shrines work in Risk of Rain 2 and what exactly they're used for.

Shrine of Shaping Function

Otherwise Known as a Soul Shrine

Risk of Rain 2 - Shrine of Shaping Full Example

The Shrines of Shaping that can now be found all over Risk of Rain 2 after the Seekers of the Storm DLC drop are incredibly unique interactables. These Shrines, alongside the new Seeker Survivor, are designed to make multiplayer runs a bit more fun. To elaborate, nothing is more frustrating in Risk of Rain 2 than dying on a level relatively early on and just having to sit there and watch your friends play and enjoy the game without you. Not only do you miss out on all the loot of the stage, but by the time you respawn at the start of the next stage, you're incredibly behind in terms of overall power, and have a high chance of dying again and getting stuck in this loop.

This is where the Shrines of Shaping come in. When activated the Shrine of Shaping takes 30 percent of everyone's Max HP immediately and 'sections it off', but in exchange, it gives everyone an extra life on said stage. So, your entire party of players will now have 30 percent less life to work with, but if you die you'll get one free respawn. Not only that, but if the Shrine of Shaping is used when allies are dead, it'll immediately respawn them where they died instead of giving them an 'extra life'. Again, this only works on the stage where this Shrine is activated, and you'll get your 30 percent health returned to you at the start of the next stage. Lastly, for those wondering, this can be used in combination with Items like Dio's Best Friend or in combination with Seeker's very own revive mechanic.
