Wonder Woman star Robin Wright revealed her feelings about starring in the upcoming Themyscira series titled Paradise Lost by James Gunn. The comment comes as several stars face uncertain futures with the DC film franchise under its new management.
Based on the popular character from DC Comics, the DCEU's Wonder Woman chronicled the origins of the titular character, journeying out from her isolationist home of Themyscira to save man’s world from Ares in World War II. The film was well-liked and followed up by Wonder Woman 1984, which had themes of lost love and sacrifice. A third film was in the works but was cancelled, with filmmaker Patty Jenkins saying she didn’t walk away from Wonder Woman 3 in the wake of Gunn's sweeping changes to the DCEU.
During his DC slate presentation, Gunn announced a prequel project focused on the Amazons of Diana's native Themyscira. In light of this, Wright, who played badass Amazonian general Antiopie in Wonder Woman, discussed how much she enjoyed her role in a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment to promote her new project Devil's Peak alongside her son. "I loved playing an Amazon,” the actress commented. “I kinda feel like I was the leader of an Amazon tribe in my past life. I haven't received that call about Paradise Lost yet. Maybe I'm too old!" Still, Wright is willing to return for the Wonder Woman prequel, jokingly saying, "Make that happen for me."
Wright would reprise her role to much fan acclaim in Wonder Woman 1984 and Justice League, even making her way into the film’s Snyder cut, which a Warner Bros insider admits should never have happened. Despite this success, there has seemingly been no communication between the actress and Warner Bros. "I thought they were finishing with Wonder Woman 1984," she said. "But Patty and I both agreed that the Amazon section was such a great part of that film. I was like, 'Why don't you write the Amazon movie?' Young girls want to see that — it's real female empowerment."
After a tumultuous period of transition in which it seemed like no one wanted the job of DCEU head, Gunn and his working partner Peter Safran have not been shy with their heavy-handed and sweeping changes concerning the DCEU's established projects and characters, with the overall direction pointing at a New 52-style reboot of the franchise. Fans have been vocal about losing so many well-loved actors, leaving the door open for many to return. Considering the Wonder Woman prequel's focus and the period it covers, Wright's involvement seems almost essential.
Fan desire can’t win out in every case, as shown by the seeming exit of many of the headline stars of Snyder's DCEU run, including Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. While there has been some backsliding, such as Gunn clarifying that Cavill wasn’t technically fired and discussing a backstage role for Affleck at Warner Bros., fans would be wise to manage expectations about Wright and other favorites in future projects.
Paradise Lost is in development at DC Studios.
