Rockstar Games announced its acquisition of Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM. These platforms enabled the creation of the largest Red Dead Online and Grand Theft Auto Online roleplay communities.
FiveM and RedM allow users to create and join custom servers for Rockstar Games' GTA Online and Read Dead Online. These standalone private servers allowed users to modify online play without altering the game's installation files. Also, because they are separate servers with a different client, players could freely swap between them and Rockstar's servers without risking an automatic ban. These features and others enable the creation of roleplaying servers for GTA Online and Read Dead Online, including the former game's popular NoPixel server.
Rockstar announced its acquisition of Cfx.re in a Newswire post on the company's website, with Cfx.re also issuing a separate statement. In Rockstar's post, the studio describes how it has been excited by all the new ways fan communities have found to expand Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. The company is especially interested in supporting the fan-run roleplay servers, prompting recent changes to Rockstar's mod policy. The studio says that its acquisition of Cfx.re will help the team find new ways to improve its services and strengthen the Read Dead Online and GTA Online roleplay communities.
Meanwhile, Cfx.re clarified that its acquisition by Rockstar will not result in any significant changes in its day-to-day operations. However, the group says that Rockstar's support will enable it to greatly improve FiveM and its community. The Cfx.re team says it is excited by the opportunity this partnership offers. However, the team also clarified that its focus would remain on improving FiveM and RedM. Cfx.re says that it will not have any involvement with the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 or any other aspect of Rockstar's game development.
In the past, Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two Interactive have had a complicated relationship with RP servers. Last year, Rockstar put restrictions on the GTA Online roleplay servers. However, those rules were mainly intended to prevent third parties from profiting from Grand Theft Auto Online. Even at the time, Rockstar was careful to clarify that it supported the RP community.
Now that Cfx.re is officially part of Rockstar Games, it seems clear that the RP servers will continue to play an essential role in Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption's future. It is, of course, reasonable that some fans might be concerned about Rockstar potentially exerting more influence later. However, for the time being, both parties seem optimistic about the partnership.
