Rockstar Games, the publisher and developer behind some of gaming's biggest titles, including Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, has made a huge quality-of-life change to its PC launcher. The studio has recently released a new update for the Rockstar Games launcher, which now allows players to choose which PC launcher they want their games to default to when loading up. A change Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption fans are sure to love.
The Rockstar Games launcher is just one of the many gaming hubs that publishers have launched in recent years, often in an attempt to compete with Steam and avoid paying Valve a percentage of a game's sales. While the Epic Games Store and GOG have established themselves alongside Steam as some of PC gaming's biggest platforms, the Rockstar Games launcher, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, and many more are often considered to be more of a burden by fans than anything else. Thankfully, publishers like Ubisoft have finally begun bringing their biggest franchises back to Steam.
Rockstar Teases GTA 6 Launch Expectations
Rockstar's expectations for the GTA 6 launch are about as high as they can possible be, according to the company's latest teaser.
Rockstar Now Lets Players Choose Their Preferred Launcher
For fans of Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and other iconic Rockstar Games titles, the publisher not only allows many of its games to be purchased through its own launcher, but also from platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store. For those who might own multiple copies of a game on different storefronts, a new quality-of-life change on the Rockstar Games launcher is going to make things a whole lot easier. As reported by Rockstar Intel, users can now select Steam, the Epic Games Store, or the Rockstar launcher as their dedicated platform per game. So, if a player wants to boot up the Steam version of Grand Theft Auto 5 by default, they can.
Alongside the recent update to its launcher, Rockstar Games also appears to have made significant improvements to its Discord integration. The studio has now implemented Discord Rich Presence, which essentially means that information for games such as Grand Theft Auto Online will now be shown on a user's profile. This isn't available for all of Rockstar's titles, but games such as Grand Theft Auto 5 (the Legacy and Enhanced versions), Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, Red Dead Redemption 2, Max Payne 3, and L.A. Noire are all supported.
Many of these updates and changes could likely be in preparation for the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, which the studio recently said would be the biggest video game launch in history. As it has now been twelve years since the release of Grand Theft Auto 5, anticipation for a new entry in the series is at an all-time high. While Grand Theft Auto 6 was initially due to launch in Fall 2025, Rockstar delayed its release to May 26, 2026, in order to further tweak and polish the game so that it meets the incredibly high expectations of fans.
