Discussion surrounding the Grand Theft Auto franchise has never been as frantic and frequent as it currently is, with the whirlwind of information that was recently revealed about the upcoming GTA 6 leading to an explosion of theories and debate. These recent developments, such as the game's second trailer and online character profiles, were a pleasant surprise in the wake of GTA 6's disappointing delay announcement, yet the good news might not end there for fans of the franchise.
Some recent reports surrounding Grand Theft Auto have caused a lot of excitement despite not being associated with GTA 6, with a prominent leaker suggesting that an upcoming remaster or port of Grand Theft Auto 4 may be on the horizon. While not officially confirmed, a lot of signs point towards this allegation possessing a good amount of validity, with such a port being the perfect way to fill the gap between Grand Theft Auto 6 in a similar way to the success that the surprising remaster of Oblivion recently brought to Bethesda and The Elder Scrolls.
Grand Theft Auto 6's Mount Kalaga Looks Like Paradise For Fans of Red Dead 2's Most Relaxing Activities
Rockstar Games' upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 region, Mount Kalaga, could be perfect for Red Dead Redemption 2 fans looking for outdoor activities.
A Remaster or Port of Grand Theft Auto 4 Could Come with a World of Benefits
Reports of a remaster or new port of Grand Theft Auto 4 recently came from Tez2, a veteran insider who has reported extensively on Rockstar titles in the past. While rumors of such a project have existed for some time, the leaker's recent statements have really thrust the rumored release into the public eye, with the port supposedly having been in active development for over a year at this point.
Some fans have criticized the supposed project's nature as a potential remaster and not a fully-fledged remake, yet a fresh port of GTA 4 seems like the most sensible decision based on the amount of resources that Rockstar has needed to dedicate to Grand Theft Auto 6's development over the past few years. Of course, The Elder Scrolls recently proved the massive potential of this approach to revisiting classic titles, with the shocking launch of Oblivion Remastered on April 22 being a huge success for Bethesda.
Despite its lack of pre-release advertising, Oblivion Remastered quickly became the third-best-selling game of 2025 in the US, further showcasing just how successful a similar project for GTA 4 could be.
The gritty story and world of 2008's Grand Theft Auto 4 has made the title legendary in its own right, being more than deserving of the same remaster treatment that Oblivion recently received, and this could act as the perfect opportunity for newer fans to experience the game for the first time. Even for returning players, a remaster would give all fans a needed boost during the longer wait for GTA 6 following its recent delay until May 2026. Even if the project ends up being a port and not a full remaster, it still seems likely that this port would come with support for things like 60FPS and 4K, giving it a fresh feel regardless.
A GTA 4 Remaster Could Easily Make Some Sensible Nods Towards Grand Theft Auto 6's Story
It is estimated that this project could release as early as this year, with this seeming like the most sensible release window to allow the remaster to thrive without encroaching too much on the 2026 hype around GTA 6. A potential remaster for Grand Theft Auto 4 could even directly aid the story of GTA 6, with Rockstar recently confirming that Lucia, one of the game's two major protagonists, was raised in GTA 4's iconic Liberty City. Some small Easter eggs could be implemented into a remastered GTA 4 to give fans their first in-game glimpses of Lucia's life, being an easy and engaging way for Rockstar to further set up the massive anticipation surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6.
To give these rumors more validity, it is worth noting that Rockstar recently acquired Video Game Deluxe, a studio that has worked extensively on past Rockstar projects such as the re-releases of L.A. Noire, as well as playing a key role in fixing the GTA Definitive Edition trilogy. This could very well mean that the studio is hard at work getting the fresh port of Grand Theft Auto 4 ready for an upcoming release, with plenty of signs currently pointing towards the rumored project's existence.
