Summary
- Doctor Strange 3 may not be released until late 2027 or even 2028 due to no script yet.
- Cumberbatch confirmed the character won't be in Avengers: Doomsday.
- Marvel's long-term plans will likely make Doctor Strange play a big role in the future MCU.
Doctor Strange has provided the Marvel Cinematic Universe with some of its most exciting moments, whether in his own movies or when appearing in others. Benedict Cumberbatch has delivered some excellent performances, and coming out of Doctor Strange, the Multiverse of Madness, people have been anticipating when the character will be returning to the MCU.
At this stage, Marvel has not confirmed when that will happen. However, Cumberbatch himself recently revealed whether or not Dr Strange will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and now a new report has hinted at when Doctor Strange 3 might hit the big screen.
Star Lord's MCU Return Should Be In A Disney Plus Series
If Marvel is going to bring back Star Lord, a Disney Plus series would be the best way to do it.
According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, there is a very small chance that Doctor Strange 3 will be released between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which are scheduled to release in 2026 and 2027, respectively. However, it was also noted that Marvel doesn't even have a script yet for the third installment of the Doctor Strange franchise, and it will more likely be released post-Avengers: Secret Wars. That means audiences might need to wait until late in 2027 or even 2028 before this movie becomes a reality that people can sit and watch.
That falls in line with a recent report that claimed Marvel Studios is set to begin shooting Doctor Strange 3 and Shang-Chi in 2026, with the films potentially due to release in 2027 at the earliest. Considering Cumberbatch himself has claimed he will not be in Avengers: Doomsday, not rushing a future movie makes sense. Dr Strange is set to have a big role in Avengers: Secret Wars, meaning his next film is either going to lead directly into that or be based on the aftermath of those events.
It's exciting to see that Marvel wants Dr Strange to play a significant role moving forward, and it's obvious that Doctor Strange 3 is going to have a lot of focus if it's happening around a signature Avengers film. There have been lots of changes to Marvel's plans in recent years because Kang is no longer involved, which appears to have impacted Dr Strange more than most. But if Marvel has managed to get around that to create new plans for the sorcerer, then that will leave people happy because the character has become extremely popular within the MCU. Given Dr Strange's powers, there are also many ways Marvel can take him, which could be an exciting part of the future.
The recent news has all pointed to the fact that Marvel has no immediate plans for the Dr Strange character, whether in his own movie or part of a wider project in the MCU. However, it has also been clear that Cumberbatch's character is very much in the long-term thinking stage and has a future in the MCU. That's a positive situation because it feels like Marvel has really gotten to grips with Dr Strange and the potential of the character in recent appearances, which might not have been clear in his original movie, and that's something fans want to see moving forward in the MCU.
