Summary

  • Respawn Entertainment is rumored to be working on a game in the Titanfall universe.
  • The rumored upcoming Titanfall game is not Titanfall 3, but a separate project led by the original game's creative head.
  • While Titanfall 2 was well-received, it did not meet EA's sales expectations, leading to a focus on new projects.

Respawn Entertainment is supposedly working on a game that is set in the Titanfall universe. This rumor surfaced after the studio's parent company, Electronic Arts, pulled the plug on a Star Wars first-person shooter.

Released in 2014 as Respawn Entertainment's debut title, the original Titanfall captivated many with its fresh, dynamic gameplay. While the sci-fi shooter received a sequel that was also critically acclaimed in the form of Titanfall 2, the follow-up unfortunately failed to meet publisher EA's sales expectations. Respawn Entertainment did revisit the Titanfall series' setting for its free-to-play battle royale experience, Apex Legends, and the developer has apparently done the same thing once again for an unannounced game.

Titanfall 3 Cannot Make The Same Mistake as Its Predecessor

With rumors circulating that a new installment for the Titanfall franchise is in the works, Respawn must not repeat a specific past mistake.

In the latest episode of Giant Bomb's Game Mess Mornings podcast, journalist Jeff Grubb claimed that Respawn Entertainment has been working on a project that was set in the Titanfall universe. This started out as a skunkworks project and involved the director of the original game, Respawn Entertainment creative head Steve Fukuda, according to Grubb. Studio CEO Vince Zampella revealed in 2023 that Fukuda was the leader of a small skunkworks team over at Respawn Entertainment that was tasked with "finding the fun in something new."

Grubb was quick to point out that the ongoing Titanfall project, which was still in its prototype phase, was definitely not Titanfall 3. Respawn Entertainment's canceled Apex Legends and Titanfall crossover game was essentially supposed to be the latter series' third entry, the journalist said. This scrapped title, dubbed Titanfall Legends, was a single-player experience directed by former Respawn Entertainment creative director Mohammad Alavi, who previously worked on the Call of Duty franchise, Titanfall games, and Apex Legends.

Respawn Entertainment's Canceled and In-Development Games 2024

Grubb mentioned the in-development Titanfall game as he discussed the recent cancelation of Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars FPS. The president of EA's non-sports games division, Laura Miele, announced the cancelation via a note amid a major company shake-up that resulted in the layoffs of around 670 employees, or what amounted to around 5% of its total workforce.

Respawn Entertainment's canceled Star Wars game would have let people play as a Mandalorian mercenary taking bounties across the galaxy. EA believed the project was too much of a financial risk even though feedback on it was always positive, according to reports. Despite the cancelation, Respawn Entertainment still has a lot on its plate. In addition to the unannounced Titanfall game, the studio is currently working on a Star Wars RTS game with Bit Reactor, as well as a sequel to 2023's well received Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
