Summary

  • Nintendo Switch 2 may receive a Red Dead Redemption 2 port as early as this year, adding to its impressive game lineup.
  • RDR2 could also get a next-gen upgrade patch for PS5 and Xbox Series X standards, showcasing the new console's capabilities.
  • Due to the large game size, RDR2 on Switch 2 may require a download as it may not fit on cartridges, potentially disappointing fans.

The Nintendo Switch 2 could be getting a Red Dead Redemption 2 port as early as this year, according to a recent rumor. After Nintendo gave fans a closer look at the console and announced a slew of incoming third-party games in April, speculation about what else could come to the system has taken off. One of the latest suggests that not only will the Nintendo Switch 2 get support for RDR2, but it will arrive before the year is over.

With less than a month to go before the Switch 2 finally arrives, its initial game lineup is taking shape, and things are looking good for Nintendo fans. The company recently highlighted 23 games coming to Switch 2 in the coming months and beyond, featuring big third-party names like Cyberpunk 2077 and FromSoftware's The Duskbloods. Now it sounds like the console will get another big release in the form of one of Rockstar's most beloved titles.

Nintendo Addresses Switch 2 Supply for 2025

A senior Nintendo official goes on record to clarify the repeatedly questioned situation concerning the company's Switch 2 console supply for 2025.

Anonymous sources reportedly close to Rockstar told Gamereactor that RDR2 would come to Switch 2 later in 2025. Nintendúo reported the same information, which could add validity to the claim, as Gamereactor says the two sites have different sources. Regardless, there's no word on a specific release date yet, but launching within the year means the port could theoretically land on Switch 2 not long after the console's release. Whenever it does come out, it'd be a huge boon for the system. Nearly seven years after its launch, Red Dead Redemption 2 broke its Steam player count record twice in a matter of weeks, in a testament to its enduring legacy.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Could Get a Switch 2 Port and Next-Gen Upgrade

The source also claimed that RDR2 will be getting a "next-gen upgrade patch" to bring the game up to PS5 and Xbox Series X standards. That update could arrive at the same time as the Switch 2 port or sometime after, but in either case, it'd be a great chance to show off the console's new-and-improved hardware. The Switch 2 has twice as many CPU cores and four times the memory bandwidth of the original, so it could run an updated Red Dead Redemption 2 far better than what's possible on the Switch 1.

There is one big caveat to the rumor, even if it proves true. Massive AAA games like RDR2 are too big for Switch 2 cartridges, as they reach well over 80-100 GB. Even a lower-resolution version may struggle to fit on a 64GB cartridge, so a download may be necessary to get the full game. Many third-party games have already confirmed that approach, so it wouldn't be a big surprise, but it is disappointing for those who prefer hard copies. Of course, the RDR2 Switch 2 port is still just a rumor at this point.
