Released on May 23, Intelligent Systems' Switch remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a reimagination of its beloved 2004 GameCube RPG that comes with upgraded visuals, an updated soundtrack, and several quality-of-life improvements, among other things. Dataminers have discovered that the game also comes with a modern-day feature that Nintendo's current handheld system does not even support.

In a recent post, Twitter user RibShark revealed that the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake seems to contain code for handling 4K, a resolution that the Switch cannot even output. Some have speculated that the discovered lines of code hint at a 4K-capable Switch 2, with YouTuber Aero claiming that a port of the game for the upcoming console would likely feature 60 FPS support as well. 2024's Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake has a 30 FPS cap and can only run at 900p even when playing on the Switch's higher-performing docked mode.

Nintendo has not officially disclosed any details regarding the Switch's successor, but developers were reportedly given the opportunity to take a look at the console during Gamescom last August. The Switch 2 can run The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at 4K 60 FPS with no loading times and make use of Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) upscaling technology, rumors suggested. It will also be underclocked to around 800 MHz while in handheld mode, resulting in a longer battery life and less overheating, according to sources.
